Banking crisis sparks gold ETF inflows for the first time in 10 months
Central Banks continue buying up gold at record levels

Our Gold Digger column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to precious metals.
Banking crisis sparks gold ETF inflows for the first time in 10 months
The collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank was a key contributor to net inflow into physically backed gold ETFs in March as investors flocked to gold in bulk, according to World Gold Council.
Physically backed gold exchange-traded funds (gold ETFs) are an important source of gold demand, with institutional and individual investors using them as part of diversified investment strategies.
“Global gold market daily trading volume averaged US$183bn in March, surging by 25% m-o-m and the highest in a year,” it says.
“This was 39% above the 2022 average (US$132bn).
“All markets were active. The daily volume on physical gold markets increased by 7% m-o-m whilst trading activities of exchange-traded gold derivatives and gold ETFs rocketed by 57% and 51% respectively.
“Global gold trading volumes averaged US$163bn per day in Q1 2023, a notable rise of 34% from the previous quarter.”
Global gold ETFs, led by European funds, saw US$1.9bn (+32t, +0.9%) net inflows in March, putting a stop to their nine-month losing streak, World Gold Council says.
“Overall, global gold ETF total assets under management (AUM) rose by 10%, aided by both inflows and the gold price appreciation, to US$220bn by the end of March,” it says.
“By the end of March, global gold ETFs’ total AUM reached the highest in eight months, helped by recent inflows and the rising gold price.”
And yet investors are still partially in ‘watch and wait mode’, with March inflows not enough to reverse negative flows for the quarter.
Current AUM is still 9% lower than the March 2022 record high of US$241bn, World Gold Council says.
Meanwhile, Central Banks continue buying up gold in bulk
Central banks hold a mix of assets as reserves to achieve specific policy objectives, like maintaining exchange rate stability, providing liquidity in times of crisis, earning income on reserves and managing risks.
They mostly comprise foreign currencies, government bonds, and gold bullion.
In December, global central bank holdings hit a 50 year high of ~37,000 tonnes, according to a World Gold Council report .
World Gold Council says central banks around the world added another 52t of gold to their reserves in February (on top of+74t in January) for the 11th consecutive month of net inflows.
“On a year-to-date basis, central banks have reported net purchases of 125t, the strongest start to a year since at least 2010 when central banks became net buyers on an annual basis.”
The next gold price catalyst: US non-farm payrolls
All the employment data leading up to the nonfarm payroll report has confirmed a clear trend that a labour market slowdown has begun, says OANDA senior analyst Ed Moya.
That’s good for gold.
“Friday’s payroll number is expected to show 230,000 jobs were created in March, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 3.6%, while wages tick higher from a month ago, but cool down year-over-year from 4.6% to 4.3%,” Moya says.
Ahead of the nonfarm payroll report, gold got hit by some profit-taking as a big chunk of the trading world closed up shop for the long weekend.
“This was a one-way gold move and bullion traders didn’t want to be caught on the wrong side of this trade when the markets reopen next week,” Moya says.
“The bull case remains for gold, but traders need to see how the market reset next week.”

How did ASX precious metals stocks perform this week?
Fairly well, obviously, but we are still on the edge of the proverbial fence sentiment-wise when it comes to gold stocks, possibly due to a handful of short-lived runs to US$2000/oz in March.
Still, every larger gold stock on our list enjoyed gains this week led by the mid-tier and advanced project developers:
Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) +14%
Regis Resources (ASX:RRL) +17%
Bellevue Gold (ASX:BGL) +14%
Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS) +13%
Resolute Mining (ASX:RSG) +19%
Tietto Minerals (ASX:TIE) +15%
Red 5 (ASX:RED) +17%
All up, 149 precious metals stocks on our list went up this week, 75 went down, and 49 stayed the same.
