ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Who’s getting out of the unemployment line today?
News

After another steady session on Wall Street, local markets digested a relatively strong jobs report heading into midday trade (released at 11:30am AEST).
The ABS data showed 114,700 new jobs were added in July, against forecast growth of just 30,000.
With more people getting back on the job hunt, economists expected the unemployment rate to rise back to 7.8 per cent — but it too beat forecasts, ticking higher to 7.5 per cent.
The gain was driven by a surge in part-time jobs, which rose by 252,000 while the number of full-time jobs fell by 23,600.
The ASX200 slowed its roll to fall into the red this morning, after two strong sessions to start the week before trading flat yesterday.
The index was dragged lower by the major banks, which all got sold off at the opening bell. It was a different story for the Small Ords, which climbed by more than 0.7 per cent after two straight losing sessions.
Reporting season has given rise to slight divergence between the big end of town and smaller companies so far, with a negative correlation between ASX200 performance and the ASXO (Small Ords index) every day so far this week.
Currency traders pushed the Aussie dollar slightly higher in the wake of the jobs data, but broadly speaking markets were were little-changed.
After copping a shellacking yesterday, gold prices stabilised somewhat with USD gold edging higher to around $US1,940 an ounce (~$2,700).

Fiji Kava (ASX:FIJ) was an early winner after announcing a deal to supply its kava extract under a license agreement with a subsidiary of health supplements company Blackmores (ASX:BKL).
Blackmores-owned BioCeuticals will have non-exclusive rights to license the use of Fiji Kava’s product in one of its anti-anxiety and stress products – AnxioCalm.
It follows a strong run of deal flow for FIJ, and news of the announcement sent the company’s shares to multi-year highs above 12 cents.
Also on the winners list was software company Vection Technologies Ltd (ASX:VR1), after signing an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) deal which will see its software introduced to the sales pipeline of computing giant Dell, via Dell’s sales partner the JMC Group.
Vection said potential revenues from the deal are “not determinable at this time”, although it said “the agreement with JMC is anticipated to be material”.
And organic honey producer EVE Investments (ASX:EVE) also ticked higher on the back of a strong sales update out of China.
EVE said its latest honey shipment sold out before even reaching port at Shanghai, and its Chinese distributor has already made an additional order for another 21,120 units of its native honey.
