Small cap stocks guide: The 100 best performing ASX small caps for FY19

Resources companies have come out on top in ASX small caps over the past 12 months – but now number just over 40 of the 100 best performers in the 2019 financial year.

Stockhead has compiled a list (see below) of the top 100 small caps based on share price returns for the year to June 30. We used a cut-off of $500 million market cap.

In FY18, resources stocks made up a whopping 70 per cent of the 100 best-performing small cap stocks.

But in the 2019 financial year, that figure fell to just 42. This makes it still the largest of any sector, but making significant inroads into the top 100 were the tech and health sectors, with 31 tech and 19 health and biotech companies among their number.

The top 100 ASX small caps list features just two resources stocks in the top 10 – PPK Group (ASX:PPK), which provides mining products and services to the industry, and Atrum Coal (ASX:ATU).

But it is a company that makes sunscreen that has come out on top of the pack: Advance Nanotek (ASX:ANO).

The mini booms

Biotech stocks – generally, companies that are trying to commercialise drugs for the treatment of a range of conditions – certainly made their presence felt in Fy19.

Biotron (ASX:BIT), Paradigm (ASX:PAR) and Bard1 (ASX:BD1) were examples of companies that made the list, while medtech stocks such as PainChek (ASX:PCK), Volpara (ASX:VHT) and Alcidion (ASX:ALC) also performed well.

Elixinol (ASX:EXL) was the best-performing pot stock in FY19.

However, infant formula stocks, which were one of the biggest themes of FY18, were nowhere to be seen on the list for FY19.

Tech stocks accounted for 31 of the top 100. Though there was no single theme, software and software-as-a-service were common winners, as well as communications stocks.

Big movers

The top 100 features one 10-bagger – Advance Nanotek, which rose 1,245 per cent to $6.72 during FY19.

This was largely on the back of an 86 per cent increase in revenue, to $12.3 million, and a big 267 per cent increase in full-year profit, to $9.6 million.

There were no other 10-baggers, which compared poorly with FY18, where there was one 20-bagger and three 10-baggers. PPK Group gained 835 per cent over the financial year, while water purification stock Purifloh (ASX:PO3) rose 670 per cent and Wisr (ASX:WZR), which offers technology that helps consumers pay off bills faster, gained 614 per cent.

The best-performing gold company was Bellevue Gold (ASX:BGL), which gained 312 per cent to reach 70c. Other top-performing resources companies included State Gas (ASX:GAS), up 319 per cent, Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR), up 260 per cent, Ausmex Mining (ASX:AMG), up 259 per cent and Bowen Coking Coal (ASX:BCB), up 257 per cent.

There were three retail stocks and one each in the real estate, financial, media, food and education sectors rounding out the top 100.
