Fitch has downgraded its gold outlook but expects prices to remain “elevated in the coming years compared to pre-Covid levels” of around $US1,450/oz.
“…we are now neutral to bearish towards gold prices for the rest of 2022, expecting the full year average to come in at $US1,800/oz, which marks a downward revision from our previous price forecast of $US1,850/oz,” Fitch says.
The current year-to-date average is $US1,844/oz, due to elevated prices seen February–June, which peaked at $US2,052/oz in March.
“Gold prices continue to be dictated by competing economic forces as a myriad of risks surround the global economy, but we believe the bearing of these issues is now toward the downside,” Fitch says.
“While we expect significant price volatility going forward, especially as the conflict in Ukraine evolves, we expect gold prices to remain elevated in the coming years compared to pre-Covid levels,” Fitch says.
Contrarian investors purposefully go against prevailing market trends by selling when others are buying, and buying when other are selling.
The theory is that markets are subject to “herding behaviour” amplified by fear and greed, making markets regularly over-and under-priced.
Right now, gold stocks are under-priced, some say, with leading names down 30-50% over the past six months.
In an article for Resources Rising Stars, industry stalwart and Stockhead columnist Barry Fitzgerald says the selloff in Aussie stocks has been fair enough given the retreat in US dollar gold price.
However, “its refusal to sink below $US1700 an oz … has those investors who like to be where no one else is wondering if it is time to wade back in to the thrashed ASX sector”.
After all, there is only so many lithium stocks you can stuff in a sock, Fitzgerald says.
“US interest rate hikes remain the bogeyman for gold, but the pace and scale of future rate hikes looks to be easing beyond the 50-75 basis points increase expected in September, suggesting the maximum damage that could have been done to the gold price in the fight against inflation has already been done,” he says.
“For Aussie gold equities in particular, the Aussie dollar price of $A2,550/oz is nothing to complain about.
“It is also a sector full of merger and acquisition possibilities as gold equities haven’t been this ‘cheap’ for a long, long time.”

$10m market cap minnow CLZ has raised $10m to take its 90,000oz Kat Gap gold project to production.
Gold Valley — a Chinese conglomerate with interests in mining, agriculture (vineyards) and energy — will provide up to $10 million funding for the mining and processing of Kat Gap ore and will receive 30% of net profits in return.
CLZ also expects its Project Management Plan to be approved by the DMIRS “imminently”, which will allow for mining operations to start following execution of the financing agreement.
“We have begun the transition from explorer to producer and shareholder patience will be rewarded,” CLZ chairman John Lester says.
“With Gold Valley as a partner, funding the extraction and processing of ore, Classic is provided with a low capital way forward whilst retaining a solid proportion of the profits and avoiding dilution.
“Classic’s development finance strategy is to reach earliest possible production at a low capex whilst minimising dilution and maximising shareholder value,” he said.
De Grey Mining just released the preliminary feasibility study (PFS) for its Mallina gold project in the Pilbara.
The expected average total annual gold production is up more than 25% to 540,000ozpa over the first 10 years, including 550,000ozpa in years 1 to 5 and peak production of 637,000ozpa in year 5.
The Hemi deposit alone contributes average annual gold production of ~500,000ozpa over the first 10 years and 520,000ozpa in years 1 to 5 – thanks to its maiden probable ore reserve of 103Mt at 1.5g/t gold for 5.1Moz which was also announced today.
Total production is expected to be 6.4Moz over a 13.6-year life-of-mine.
At a capital cost of around $985 million, the mine boasts a post-tax internal rate of return of 41% and payback of 1.8 years post tax at a gold price of $2400/oz and average all in sustaining costs of $1220/oz over its first five years and $1280/oz over its first decade.
De Grey boss Glenn Jardine says a DFS is due for completion in mid-2023, with a project funding outcome also expected to be completed in line with that.
There are almost certainly suitors waiting in the wings for the $1.3 billion explorer though. Notably Gruyere gold mine owner Gold Road Resources (ASX:GOR), which has amassed a nearly 20% stake in De Grey through its takeover of De Grey’s former major shareholder DGO Gold.
Jardine said on a conference call today that no discussions had taken place with Gold Road and that it had not requested a board seat.
