Ahead of tonight’s presidential debate, US voters still appear split on their preferred candidate at the upcoming election on November 3.

But there are no such doubts in the southern Romanian town of Deveselu, where villagers re-elected mayor Ion Aliman even though he died two weeks ago.

The villagers voted to return Aliman to office with around 64 per cent of the vote, as a posthumous show of respect for his work in previous terms.

Aliman died on September 17 from complications due to COVID-19. His name was already on the voting ballots and a number of villagers gathered at his grave after voting. New elections will now be scheduled.

On local markets, the ASX200 started higher following a strong session on Wall Street overnight, but was unable to maintain its momentum and had drifted close to flat by midday trade.

It was more bullish among the small caps, where the ASX Emerging Companies Index rose more than one per cent.

Graphite company Renascor Resources (ASX:RNU) held its gains into midday trade, after signing a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese anode company.

The customer is a subsidiary of the state-owned Fujian Metallurgical Holding Co. Ltd. The MoU provides for “the supply of up to 10,000 tonnes per annum of purified spherical graphite (PSG) over a period of ten years”, RNU said.

And talk of the market Piedmont Lithium (ASX:PLL) continued its strong rally from yesterday after confirming a five-year sales deal with Tesla. Shares in PLL have now climbed more than 300 per cent since September 10.
