MinRex Resources (ASX:MRR) has appointed former Pilbara Minerals’ founding geologist George Karageorge as its new managing director as it focuses on its lithium assets.

Karageorge, who was previously a non-executive director of the company, was instrumental in both the discovery of the Pilbara Minerals’ giant Pilgangoora lithium and tantalum deposit in 2014 and guiding it through to first lithium concentrate production in 2018.

A geologist with over 25 years’ experience in exploration mining covering rare metal, base and precious metals, he has held senior technical and executive management roles for exploration and mining companies such as Western Mining Corporation, Anglo Gold Ashanti and Barrack Mines across the globe since the early 1980’s.

He also served as the project geologist, project manager and currently managing director of Argent Minerals (ASX:ARD).

As part of the management shuffle, Pedro Kastellorizos will step down from his position as chief executive officer following a month-long handover but will continue to support the company as a new non-executive director.

“I am very excited to be taking over as MD & CEO of MinRex as we continue our strategy to become an emergent lithium explorer with high-quality assets in close proximity to world-class Lithium and Tantalum producers Pilbara Minerals, Mineral Resources, and Global Lithium,” Karageorge said.

“Mr Kastellorizos’ appointment to the Board adds significant experience to our highly experienced team.

Early on-ground reconnaissance on MinRex’s new battery metals portfolio in the Pilbara (WA) has given the board confidence that we will discover lithium and other battery metal bearing deposits in these project areas.

“We look forward to unlocking this potential for shareholders as preparations for the 2022 Pilbara project field season are already underway with maiden drilling programs set to start in the coming months.”

He added that the company’s new team in the Pilbara will spend late February and early March looking for extensions to the known pegmatite on the ground and defining new trends and structures that appear to control the lithium-tin-tantalum mineralisation ahead of drilling in April.
