Around this time last year, battery metals prices were booming.

According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence:

  • Lithium carbonate and hydroxide were up 85% and 127% respectively;
  • Graphite, up 15.2%;
  • Cobalt, up 20.8%; and
  • Nickel sulphate, up 31.9%.

Rare earths were also going parabolic. Sans coal and oil, battery metals were blowing the rest of the commodities complex away.

While equities had begun to come off the boil there were plenty of big year-to-date winners, led by Galileo Mining (ASX:GAL) (542%), Latin Resources (ASX:LRS) (297%), and Essential Metals (ASX:ESS) (208%).

We pulled those numbers at the start of June, 2022.

Importantly, since then, all three have retained a big chunk of those gains.

Battery metals prices in 2023 are down across the board, but stocks are still gaining on positive news. We have eight +100% winners for YTD 2023.

One of them has gained an incredible 11,150% in just over four years, from 2.4c/sh to $2.70/sh.

2023’s Biggest Winners

LIONTOWN (ASX:LTR)

This near term lithium miner has been one of the most remarkable and consistent stocks in recent years.

“This $26m junior could be the next big thing in lithium,” predicted analyst and former geo Dr Chris Baker in Feb 2019.

LTR went on to become one of 2019’s true lithium success stories, up 239% in a horror year for both producers and explorers.

It kept growing against the tide in 2020, hitting $360m market cap by October as its flagship Kathleen Valley project in WA steadily progressed towards a development decision.

By the end of June 2021, it boasted a 12-month return of 720% and a market cap above $1.4bn. It was worth $3.6bn by the end of the year.

LTR, which is now building Kathleen Valley ahead of first production in 2024, recently hit all-time highs following a rejected $5.2bn takeover bid from lithium major Albemarle. It is currently worth a record high $6bn.

From $26m to $6bn in just over four years, with a few dips and bumps along the way. On a share price basis that’s a gain of 11,150%, from 2.4c/sh to $2.70/sh. What a ride.

 

PATRIOT BATTERY METALS (ASX:PMT)

PMT dual-listed on the ASX late last year, raising $4,200,000 at an issue price of $0.60 per CDI.

It spiked hard on debut, thanks in part to the magic touch of modern lithium legend Ken Brinsden.

Brinsden, who sits on the board as non-exec chair and director, helped turn Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) from a penny dreadful into a $15 billion lithium giant.

A maiden resource is on the way, and with eyewatering drill hits like 83.7m at 3.13% lithium pundits are predicting something of size. This makes it a takeover target, Canaccord Genuity mining analyst Reg Spencer says.

 

WESTERN MINES GROUP (ASX:WMG)

In April, tightly held WMG announced a cumulative 693.5m at 0.28% nickel, 128ppm cobalt, 61ppm copper, plus palladium and platinum in one drill hole at its “extensive” Mulga Tank mineralised system in WA.

There are two main types of nickel deposits: sulphide and laterite.

Sulphides, like those found at Mulga Tank, are the holy grail for explorers because they are easier and cheaper to process into battery quality nickel.

These deposits are also harder to find at scale, which makes this project one to watch.

 

SUREFIRE RESOURCES (ASX:SRN)

SRN says a new exploration target of 682Mt to 1190Mt @ 0.2% to 0.43% vanadium propels its Victory Bore project in WA to “world class status”.

When added to the current 321Mt @ 0.39% resource, the exploration target boosts the project’s potential to 1003Mt-1,511Mt @ 0.2% to 0.43% V205, “making it world class and potentially one of the largest vanadium resources in the world”.

For reference, advanced vanadium stocks AVL (ASX:AVL), Vanadium Resources (ASX:VR8), and Technology Metals (ASX:TMT) have respective resources of 239Mt at 0.73%, 680Mt at 0.70%, and 153.7Mt at 0.8%.

An update on the PFS – a look at the economics of building a project – is in progress, SRN says.

 

LINCOLN MINERALS (ASX:LML)

In January, the graphite explorer rose, Lazarus-like, from over two years in bourse purgatory.

LML’s main game is the advanced Kookaburra Gully project in South Australia, which has a 3.88Mt resource grading 12.6% TGC for 489,360t of contained graphite.

In March, a ~6000m drilling campaign kicked off to grow resources at the Kookaburra Gully deposit (2.03Mt) and the nearby historic Koppio graphite mine (1.85Mt). A 2017 feasibility study is also being updated over 2023.

 

FUTURE BATTERY MINERALS (ASX:FBM)

The nickel stock formerly known as Auroch has branched out into lithium with two projects – Kangaroo Hills in WA and the Nevada Lithium Project.

It still has the Saints, Nepean and Leinster high-grade nickel sulphide projects in WA.

Its parabolic run since March started with some promising drill results at Kangaroo Hills (including a highlight 29m @ 1.36% Li2O from 38m), and then continued with a positive scoping study on the 21,000t Saints project.

Last week FBM also announced a new lithium discovery in Nevada, where drilling pulled up a highlight 29m @ 1,010ppm Li from a depth of 210.3m.

 

LINDIAN RESOURCES (ASX:LIN)

The former bauxite explorer rerated heavily last year after winning a protracted 2018 dispute for Kangankunde, one of the world’s largest REE projects outside China.

The gains have continued in 2023 as the company gears up for a Q2/Q3 maiden mineral resource estimate at this “tier 1 asset in the making”.
