• Battery producers look to increase energy density and drive down raw material costs
  • CATL’s Qilin battery is 13% more powerful than the one planned by Tesla
  • Stellantis adds 5 years to lithium offtake agreement with Vulcan Energy

Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium.

Some of the world’s leading battery cell producers are targeting mass production of larger cells to increase energy density and cut down on raw material needs.

This week, the world’s biggest EV battery maker, CATL, released a new electric car battery with a range of more than 1,000km on a single charge that’s 13% more powerful than one planned by Tesla.

CATL said it plans to begin manufacturing the Qilin battery next year.

Earlier this month, Tesla received the first 4680 format cell samples from Panasonic and is expecting to integrate them into its Model Y production lines in Austin, Texas, by 2023.

The carmaker says the cells could deliver six times the power and five times the energy density while reducing the cost of raw materials, including cobalt, lithium, nickel and manganese, in the overall battery pack.

In the UK last week, gigafactory Britishvolt said it plans to develop 4690 cells that are 46mm in diameter and 90mm in height – compared to the usual, smaller 2170 format.

“This improves efficiency, reduces waste, lowers costs and makes us leaner and more agile. We can also tailor the length of the cell to suit specific applications,” founder and chief executive Orral Nadjari said.

The larger size of the cells helps with power density and is expected to be used in vehicles that need longer distances between charges and higher power output.

And South Korea’s Samsung SDI is also testing 4680 battery cell technology, which it may offer to customers such as Stellantis, BMW and Volvo.

OEMs move upstream

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end-users are increasingly moving upstream in the supply chain to secure critical battery minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite.

A smart move when you see lithium demand numbers floating around the 2.75m tonnes mark by 2030.

In April, we saw Elon Musk post to Twitter that Tesla “might have to get into lithium mining and refining” because of sky high prices and a long lead time to production – he then struck a deal with Brazilian mining giant, Vale, to purchase nickel not long after.

And German auto maker Volkswagen recently said it needs to be  “actively involved in the raw material business” and move further down the supply chain when sourcing batteries.

Last week carmaker Stellantis added five years on to 2035 a lithium hydroxide offtake agreement with Vulcan Energy Resources (ASX:VUL) for supply from its Zero Carbon Lithium project in Germany, as well as making a $76mn equity investment in the firm to become its second-largest shareholder.

In an interview with Stockhead, Vulcan managing director Francis Wedin says that while the move marks the first time an automaker has invested upstream in a listed lithium company, there will be many more to come in the industry.

Stellantis has 16 brands — including Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep and Chrysler — has one of the largest electric vehicle (EV) and decarbonisation plans of any automaker, aiming for 100pc EV sales in Europe by 2030.

WEEKLY TOP 3

TEMPEST MINERALS (ASX:TEM)

(Up on no news)

In May the company flagged multiple geochemical anomalies including trace elements consistent with rocks known to host lithium pegmatites at its Rocky Hill project in WA.

But notably, in March TEM spiked hard on a potentially very large copper discovery.

The first 709m-long hole of a two-hole diamond drilling program at ‘Orion’, part of the flagship ‘Meleya’ project in WA, pulled up three mineralised copper sections.

The second, 1,021m-long hole hit more of the same, and assays are pending.

Meleya is part of TEM’s 900sqkm ‘Yalgoo’ tenements, where the company has + 50km strike length of a previously unexplored segment of a mineral-rich greenstone belt.

The belt hosts several world class mines, including one of Australia’s most successful high-grade copper-zinc and precious metal operations, ‘Golden Grove’.

The $22m market cap stock has softened over the past few months but remains +145% year-to-date.

It had $8.1m in the bank following a recent raise.

TECHNOLOGY METALS AUSTRALIA (ASX:TMT)

(Up on no news)

The company’s primary exploration focus has been on the Murchison Technology Metals Project, around 40km southeast of Meekatharra in WA’s mid-west region with the aim to potentially supply high-quality V2O5 flake product to both the steel market and the emerging VRFB market.

A key differentiation between Gabanintha and a number of other vanadium deposits is the consistent presence of the high-grade massive vanadium – titanium – magnetite basal unit, which results in an overall higher grade for the Gabanintha Vanadium Project.

However, during the March quarter, TMT advanced work on the Integration Study designed to combine the Yarrabubba Project (Yarrabubba) with the Gabanintha Project, which will be named the Murchison Technology Metals Project (MTMP).

TMT said Yarrabubba’s higher vanadium grades in concentrate (than Gabanintha), combined with the ability to produce a highly sought-after ilmenite by-product from Yarrabubba, indicate the potential to enhance the economic metrics in the early years of the project, lowering the risk of the full MTMP development.

The company also extended and expanded the scope of the MoU with leading Japanese VRFB development company, LE System, for the development of a fully integrated downstream vanadium electrolyte industry in Australia.

GREENTECH METALS (ASX:GRE)

(Up on no news)

GRE is basking in the glow of a bunch of new drilling results – including a highlight 32m @ 2.43% copper — which could substantially increase the size of the ‘Whundo’ copper-zinc project in the Pilbara region of WA.

The results announced last week confirm that the high-grade copper and zinc at Whundo persists at depth and beyond the current resource envelope, GRE says.

Then there’s the bonus gold grades of up to 3.34g/t, which accompany the higher-grade copper zones and “further enhances the potential economics of the project”.

Whundo is at the core of a much broader copper and zinc system, GRE exec director Thomas Reddicliffe says.

“Drilling has demonstrated that the mineralisation at Whundo remains open at depth and with grades persisting,” he says.

“This and the identification of two additional mineralised horizons provides further impetus for the company to build upon the known resource.”

Assay results for three additional holes drilled at Whundo, and seven holes drilled at the nearby ‘Ayshia’ deposit are expected in the coming weeks.

Once all assays are received, GRE will look to update the existing resource at Whundo/Ayshia of 3.6 Mt @ 1.2% copper and 1.4% zinc.

The $10.6m market cap Artemis Resources (ASX:ARV) spinout is up 70% on its December IPO price of 20c per share.

It had $4m in the bank at the end of March.
