High Voltage: As lithium comes a-cropper, gains hunters look to copper. (Yeah, it rhymes)
Mining
Mining
As the loving feeling for lithium (and nickel) appears lost right about now – exacerbated by plummeting spot prices but also the gloom surrounding the high-profile Liontown funding cut this week – where do we turn to for a feel-good story? The headline will tell you and we’ll get to that momentarily.
As Josh Chiat put it in yesterday’s Monsters of Rock:
It’s been a rough week for investors in lithium stocks, especially Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) or people named Gina Rinehart and Tim Goyder.
Actually not all is lost for Li and Ni for true believers (taking a longer-term view on the EV narrative for instance).
On Tuesday, ASX lithium stocks generally saw something of a rebound on dip buying ahead of Thursday’s meeting of mining industry participants with the Australian and WA government ministers.
And then there was a very decent M&A narrative courtesy of Aussie lithium stock Lithium Power International (ASX:LPI), involving Chilean copper bigwig Codelco. Essentially, Lithium Power International shareholders have approved a $365 million cash takeover that will see Codelco snare their Maricunga brine asset.

But in the meantime, Cu, which is used as part of the wiring setup in EVs among other clean-energy tech uses, appears to be having something of a resurgence of late after a heavily fluctuated 2023.
That’d be copper, periodic table flunkers.
Cases in point:
• ASX copper plays, including: Cobre, True North, Hot Chili, NEX, Aeon and Aeris have all made strong gains at various stages this week, to name more than a handful.
• BHP – Australia’s biggest copper producer – just announced the latest six companies out of a very long shortlist of about 500 to join its Xplor funding/acceleration program. And they include two ASX stocks, one of which is copper pure play Cobre. The other is Hamelin Gold, which is on the hunt for gold as well as nickel-copper-PGE.
• Global investment manager Sprott likes copper’s forecast – along with gold, silver and uranium, that is.
“Despite economic challenges, copper demonstrated remarkable resilience compared to other commodities like lithium and nickel,” said Sprott’s analysts about the commodity’s performance last year.
And the firm believes the crucial supply and demand factor looks to be standing copper in good stead for 2024.
“There is also the potential for mergers and acquisitions in the industry as many large miners prioritize copper as a strategic metal, adding an additional layer of optimism for existing copper miners,” said the Sprott analysts.
You can read more about that > here.
• And then there’s this report that caught High Voltage’s eye earlier this week…
“The growing electrification of the automotive market will drive a 3.1-fold increase in copper demand for EV motors in 2034 compared with 2023.” So says market research firm IDTechEx.
The firm has released a new report it’s titled Copper Demand for Cars 2024-2034: Trends, Utilization, Forecasts and overall it’s bullish on copper’s part in an EV-dominated automotive future. Not so much rare earths, however.
“The market has heavily relied on rare earths for the permanent magnets used in these motors, but, as many will be aware, there is a drive to eliminate these rare earths due to their price volatility and environmental impact,” wrote IDTechEx, adding:
“Alternative motor technologies can often present a new and increased demand for copper.”
IDTechEx research director Dr James Edmondson notes that electric motors are in the process of undergoing a significant change, with a push towards magnet-free motors that would in turn increase the use of copper in wound-rotor motor alternatives.
“The wound rotor motor is proving to be the go-to magnet-free option,” notes Edmondson in the report, “and the use of copper windings on the rotor significantly increases the copper content of the motor, with some examples presenting more than double the copper of a comparable permanent magnet motor.”
The report looks into other technologies, too, that don’t use as much copper, such as the reluctance rotor, which is steel heavy, but it takes a favourable view on copper-based EV components when considering the likely evolution of the technology over the next 10 years.
