Special Report: Taiton Resources hopes to show evidence that the Highway project is an extension of the Olympic Metallogenic Province by carrying out a gravity survey in one of the most sought-after regions for IOCG deposits.
Taiton Resources (ASX:T88) is one of Sanlam Private Wealth’s top ASX stock picks when it comes to companies with critical minerals exposure.
The explorer’s Highway project hosts shallow magmatic-hydrothermal mineralisation interpreted to have formed at the same time as the world-class Olympic Dam deposit in South Australia’s Gawler Craton.
Olympic Dam is one of the one of the world’s largest iron-oxide copper-gold deposits and the fourth largest copper deposit globally.
From a real estate perspective, Faulkner says they are in the right area given their project is surrounded by the likes of Prominent Hill, Olympic Dam and Carrapateena.
Soil sampling carried out by Taiton in the second half of 2023 identified a coherent 2.5km molybdenum anomaly and maiden drilling completed later that year confirmed the presence of molybdenum at the Merino prospect.
While it’s still early days, recent exploration results have highlighted several styles of mineralisation which have equal potential for success.
A gravity survey is now underway targeting potential IOCG mineralisation at the Pluto and Garfield prospects.
The survey will be carried out on an initial 400m by 400m east-west grid with infill sampling to be completed on an as required basis depending on initial readings.
The move follows recent reconnaissance ultrafine soil sampling program which identified multi-element geochemical anomalism broadly coincident with geophysical anomalism provides additional support for potential IOCG style mineralisation.
Samples from that program have been submitted to the laboratory for multielement analysis.
“The start of the gravity survey, at the Highway project, is a clear sign that Taiton has built enough information to test for IOCG,” T88 executive director Noel Ong says.
“Taiton has always touted that the Highway project as a possible extension of the Olympic Metallogenic Province. Historically, this line of thinking has largely been ignored as the region is believed to be too shallow to host IOCG target.
“Our work now is to show evidence that the current view is incorrect, and our extensive landholding may be one of the most sought-after provinces for the world famous South Australian IOCG deposits.”
Meanwhile, work at the company’s Challenger West project, also in South Australia, has uncovered an area that is showing great promise for gold mineralisation.
Anomalous soil samples for gold have been found to be associated with geology that is commonly associated with gold mineralisation with widespread quartz float indicating potential underlying veining.
Follow up work is being planned and the company will continue to keep investors and the market informed.
