Gold Digger: Finally! Gold smashes though resistance at US$2000/oz as US economy comes apart at the edges

Our Gold Digger column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to precious metals.
After several attempts last month to breach the psychologically important US$2k/oz mark, gold has finally done it with ease.
We woke up yesterday morning to prices of $US2038/oz and $25.2/oz for gold and silver, respectively, as a waning US economy signals the potential end of the rate tightening cycle.
Gold has only traded at this level on two days ever.
“Gold can’t be stopped,” OANDA senior analyst Edward Moya says.
“A weakening economy continues to drive safe haven flows towards gold.
“Gold investors now need to see further evidence that the service sector part of the economy is slowing and that could help the big rally continue.”
Gold has its eye on record highs and it might not take much to get there, Moya says. A weaker jobs report on Friday could see that tested.
“If recession expectations continue to grow for the second half of the year, gold should have a path towards the $2100 level.”
Silver also has plenty of room to run, remaining a long way from its record 1980s levels of ~US$50/oz.
NY gold closes at $2020, 6th highest ever. Meanwhile, silver at $25 is barely half way to its all-time high. Buggy-brained silver bugs … read and weep 🤪🤪🤪 pic.twitter.com/4E70pzknxb

Very well. Almost every large and mid-cap stock on our list enjoyed gains, led by former struggler Resolute Mining (ASX:RSG) (+14%) which is now up 140% year-to-date.
RSG crept back over the $1bn mark yesterday and is now at ~20-month highs (but still well below its August 2019 peak of ~$1.80).
All up, 110 precious metals stocks on our list went up yesterday, 46 went down, and 117 stayed the same.
Here’s how ASX-listed precious metals stocks are performing:

IVR owns the advanced Paris project in South Australia, where a 2021 pre-feasibility study envisaged 26.7Moz of production over a short 5-7 year life.
Based on an all-in sustaining cost of $17.45/oz ($US11.61/oz) IVR is expecting life of mine free cashflow of between $487m-$602m. It would cost $131m to build.
Those numbers are based on silver recovery only; lead recoveries will be addressed in the DFS which is currently underway.
Meanwhile, a ~7000m step out drilling program was recently completed to grow the shallow 18.8Mt @ 88g/t silver and 0.52% lead resource (53.1Moz silver and 97.6kt lead).
Initial results have been solid – including a highlight 17m @ 130g/t from 175m – with the bulk of the assays due mid-April.

LRL is embarking on two significant gold exploration programs.
The company already boasts a 500,000oz at 5g/t resource at its namesake project along the mineral-rich Abitibi greenstone belt in Quebec, Canada. More drilling to grow this high-grade resource is now in the works.
Earlier this week it announced negotiations with Quebec projects vendor GETT Gold are ongoing “regarding the terms and conditions of the project acquisition agreement and the subsequent amendments”, which has pushed out the payment date one month to 30 April.
At its historic Comet Vale project in WA, the company has now embarked on a 20-hole, 15,000m program to test the high-grade Sovereign Trend.
It will be the “first genuine surface exploration undertaken at the project for 15 years,” LRL says. An updated resource estimate for Sovereign is due in the current quarter.
RXL has defined a sizeable (and high grade) 3.02Moz open pit and underground resource at the flagship Youanmi project in WA.
It is now halfway through a 23km resource development and near mine drilling program and results are dribbling in, with yesterday’s highlights including several 4-8m-thick hits grading between 8-14g/t at the ‘Link’ target.
These are well above the already high average underground grade at Youanmi of 6.89g/t.
“Our confidence that Youanmi is a large-scale, high-grade gold system with enormous upside continues to grow with each drill result that we receive,” RXL managing director Rob Ryan says.
“The first results from Link show a higher-grade tenor of gold mineralisation than our geological models indicated, suggesting that this sector of the deposit will contribute positively to the planned Mineral Resource review and update later this year to be included in the Feasibility Study.”
Last week it was announced that the Youanmi JV with Venus Metals would be consolidated into RXL to simplify the ownership structure ahead of development.
RXL will shell out 110m shares to VMC for its part in the JV – worth ~$30.8m, equivalent to VMC’s entire market cap — with 55m of those to be distributed to shareholders.
The remaining 55m shares with be retained by VMC, which will own 18% of RXL once the deal completes.
A recently published Scoping Study – the first proper look at the economics of (re)building a project — contemplated a 71,000oz per annum operation.
Over an initial eight-year mine life it would produce 569koz of gold at an all-in sustaining cost of $1,546/ounce.
The pre-tax NPV came in at just over $300 million with an internal rate of return of 45% assuming a gold price of $2,450/oz (currently ~$3000/oz Aussie).
