Gold Digger: Silver plays catch-up to gold on record price run

  • Gold hit US$4000/oz this week, but silver is also closing on a record that has stood for 45 years
  • The LBMA price ran to US$49.71/oz on Thursday
  • And Australian silver stocks are running hot on the back of the price movement

The biggest mining stories of 2025 have centred on gold and critical minerals.

But one metal that bridges the gap between those worlds has begun to shine just as bright.

Silver is on the cusp of punching through US$50/oz, an all time high that has stood since the short-lived Hunt Brothers squeeze of January 1980.

And it hasn’t taken a squeeze to make it happen.

Having been left in the dust as gold prices soared in 2024 and early 2025, silver briefly topped US$51/oz on the futures market on Thursday before a pullback in precious metals reduced the temperature.

We’re now talking US$49.71/oz on the LBMA, an extraordinary +69% YTD that dwarfs even gold’s 52% gain.

That’s opening new opportunities for ASX silver stocks.

Australia’s newest silver miner Polymetals Resources (ASX:POL) dropped its quarterly report today, covering the first full quarter of operations after ore treatment at its Endeavor silver and zinc mine began in Cobar.

Its first shipment of 11,000t of zinc concentrate is expected to leave Adelaide next week with a first cargo of silver-lead concentrate to follow in November.

But the real juice being provided by the rapid ascent of silver and gold prices (the latter is a by-product), is shown in exec chair David Sproule’s commentary on the mine’s tailings inventory.

Considered metallurgically complex, independent testwork has begun as the miner looks to capitalise on silver and gold prices that have risen from US$28 to US$48/oz and US$2400 to US$4000/oz respectively since a 2023 study.

Just 5.2Mt sit in a current resource estimate, with more potentially open to inclusion as prices make lower grade material economic.

“These significant price increases have encouraged a review of our Endeavor tailings Mineral Resource estimate, noting that about 20 million tonnes of stored tailings are available for potential inclusion in an updated resource estimate,” Sproule told investors.

“These tailings contain residual quantities of silver, gold, lead and zinc.

“We note that a potential metallurgical flowsheet is expected to be complex, however, the latent value contained within the tailings provides strong justification for the investigations currently underway.”

Rising tide

While the tailwinds for gold producers are well documented, pure play silver stocks have received strong interest from investors in recent weeks as well.

Polymetals shares fell over 5% on Friday as the quarterly report showed $2.3m in operating cash outflows during a ramp up quarter for the Endeavor mine.

But it remains up ~58% YTD, with a market cap of $333m. Over in WA, West Coast Silver (ASX:WCE) stock has lifted close to 300% YTD, after its acquisition of the historic Elizabeth Hill project in the Pilbara.

Investigator Resources (ASX:IVR), which has for years toiled away at its Paris project in South Australia through a market downturn, has seen its shares lift 195% YTD.

A DFS on a 1.5Mtpa operation is under way, supported by a $10 million raising at 4.2c a share last week (a premium to its 10-day VWAP at the time), with the 57Moz project regarded as the highest grade undeveloped pure-play silver deposit in Australia.

Investigator’s new MD Lachlan Wallace, previously at the head of copper producer Hillgrove Resources (ASX:HGO) says there is a demand for new silver ounces out of jurisdictions like Australia, with need growing for its use in solar panels as well as for safe haven investment.

“Around 75% of the supply of silver is coming from Latin America, Russia or China and they’re not exactly the poster children for … operational or geopolitical stability, so we do offer something different for investors who are wanting to get exposure to the silver market,” he told Barry FitzGerald on a recent episode of the Explorers Podcast.

“Serious leverage is at the smaller end of town and in particular those operations that are going to go from exploration through development and into silver production within this cycle.

“I just think silver’s got so much further to run.”

Over in New South Wales, Argent Minerals (ASX:ARD) recently began drilling at its Kempfield project, which already hosts a polymetallic resource of 63.7Mt at 69.75g/t silver equivalent for 142.8Moz AgEq including 65.8Moz silver, 125,192oz gold, 207,402t lead and 420,373t zinc.

“The rising silver price has enabled many juniors in the silver sector to accelerate their exploration activities, including Argent at our Kempfield Project,” Argent MD and CEO Pedro Kastellorizos said.

“Investors are taking more notice of silver companies and this momentum is creating opportunities for Argent and others to raise capital for their exploration and development programs.

“Our recent $4.85 million placement, which was oversubscribed, is a great example of this.

“We don’t expect the silver price to slow down anytime soon either, with demand from the green energy sector continuing to grow.”

At a market cap of $61m, Argent shares are 60% higher YTD.

But wait there’s more

Other ASX silver stocks on a tear include Silver Mines (ASX:SVL), up 150% on tailwinds from the broader market while it seeks environmental approval of its Bowdens project in New South Wales.

$35m capped Lode Resources (ASX:LDR) is up 133% YTD on its Montezuma project in Tasmania and sold its Webbs Consol project to Rapid Critical Metals (ASX:RCM), itself up 560% to a market cap of $55m.

Maronan Metals (ASX:MMA), owner of the advanced Maronan project near Mt Isa, is up around 61% YTD, while other players overseas have also enjoyed the market attention.

An even bigger fish could be jumping, if a standalone player is to secure South32’s (ASX:S32) Cannington mine in Queensland against rumoured competition from large international silver producers.

The Australian’s Dataroom section this week said Macquarie Capital was on board for a potential sale process of the mine which could value the asset at ~$1bn.

Cannington produced 10.3Moz of silver in FY25, plus 92,400t of lead and 44,500t zinc, all significantly lower on FY24 numbers. They’re expected to fall substantially this year and next due to challenging underground conditions.

FY26 guidance has been set at 40,000t zinc, 87,000t lead and 8.2Moz silver, with FY27 estimates of 43,000t zinc, 80,000t lead and 8.7Moz silver.

Gold medal performers

Who were some of the top precious metals names this week?

Battery Age Minerals (ASX:BM8)

Originally formed to explore for lithium and germanium, Battery Age Minerals has followed the money to Argentina, where it just got approval to drill the El Aguila gold and silver project.

Grades from surface samples has run as high as 174.5g/t Au and 327g/t Ag at Aguila South and 44.2g/t Au and 4739g/t Ag, along with some decent shallow drill hits.

The permit from the Santa Cruz mining ministry means BM8 will now be able to put those historical results to the test, just 75km from AngloGold Ashanti’s Cerro Vanguardia mine and 40km inland from Pan American Silver’s Cerro Moro.

A 2000m RC program is set to begin in November.

“This outcome highlights the constructive and collaborative approach of the Santa Cruz authorities and reinforces the strength of our local partnerships. With regulatory approval secured and preparations complete, Battery Age is well positioned to advance toward its maiden drilling program and test the potential of this high-grade Au-Ag system,” BM8 MD Nigel Broomham said.

“El Aguila adds meaningful depth to our portfolio, complementing our cornerstone Bleiberg Germanium Project in Austria. Germanium remains a highly strategic and valuable pillar of our business and progressing El Aguila in parallel strengthens Battery Age’s diversified growth profile across both critical and precious metals.”

Ardiden (ASX:ADV)

Ardiden ran 55% higher on Friday alone after announcing the a merger with Canada’s Lac Gold.

It vends the Rouyn project in Quebec’s Cadillac Break, with a resource of 15.8Mt at 3.28g/t Au for 1.66Moz, into the ASX listed Ardiden, which already owns the 110,000oz Pickle Lake gold project in neighbouring Ontario.

“This merger with Lac Gold marks a pivotal next step in our growth strategy,” Ardiden chair Michelle Roth said.

“Rouyn adds a high-quality resource in Québec’s world-class Cadillac Break, complementing the scale and potential of Pickle Lake in Ontario.

“Together, we are creating a well-funded Canadian gold explorer and developer with a strong leadership team, a balanced portfolio, and a clear path to unlocking long-term value for our shareholders.”

Lac Gold shareholders will own 61.9% of the merged entity, with Ardidn also planning to raise $10m as part of the deal.

Matthew Keegan led Lac paid C$25m last year to take Rouyn off the hands of TSX listed Yorbeau Resources.

At Stockhead, we tell it like it is. While Investigator Resources, Argent Minerals, Maronan Metals, Rapid Critical Minerals and West Coast Silver are Stockhead advertisers, they did not sponsor this article.
