Gold Digger: Australian miners rejoice as gold price flirts with record highs

The Australian dollar fell to US63 cents Tuesday after the Reserve Bank kept interest rates on hold and the American greenback surged.
Worrisome for some, and a blessing for others.
For local gold producers, a weak Aussie against the greenback is good news. Just check out this deviation between the AUS (up 3.68%) and USD (down 2.15%) gold price over the past 3 months:
At $3014/oz, local gold is currently paying near record prices.
Nice for our cabal of mid tiers, which are currently grappling with escalating costs.
Australia’s second largest gold miner Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST) just generated the strongest earnings performance in its history on an average realised price of $2,639/oz in FY23.
That’s up 8% from $2,443/oz in FY22.
Similarly, Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) and Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS) booked a realised gold price of ~$2,590/oz for FY23.
Should these current levels hold – and all else being equal – Aussie gold miners could be looking at another big income bump in FY24.
However, gold sentiment runs in US dollar terms, which explains the lack of investor love for the more speculative end of the bourse.
Will this bearish mood last for much longer?
Perhaps not. Fitch says a breakout could be coming in early 2024 if rate cuts and recessions emerge.
Resources investors Goehring and Rozencwajg also believe gold’s rise could be “explosive” as rate increases come to an end.

SOUTHERN CROSS GOLD (ASX:SXG)
In one of the most exciting days of trade in the gold space in weeks, the recently listed tiddler showed there was still life in the historical Victorian goldfields.
SXG came to market in 2022 chasing riches in the historic mining state, where new discoveries and mines have run dry in recent years.
Its main game is Sunday Creek; a large and high grade ‘Fosterville-like’ gold system.
On Tuesday, it announced this hit, which exceeds its next best result by a factor of 3:
Gold ranged as high as 2670g/t and while that grade is unlikely to be replicated at scale (equivalent to almost 86oz in each tonne of rock), it is certainly a number that will make gold bugs sit up and take notice.
SXG’s strategy thus far has been to drill hard. It plans to release a maiden resource for Sunday Creek when the project has hit critical mass, and not before.
“Everyone asks in Australia about putting out a resource — when are you putting out a resource?” managing director Michael Hudson told Stockhead in June.
“Investors have been trained to think that that’s when you get value. But resources can be debilitating if they’re not big enough,” he says.
“That’s where people make their money in exploration. They want 10 baggers, they want things to be huge, and they want them to be taken out by majors.
“Majors aren’t going to buy 300,000, 600,000 or even 1Moz systems.”
TOUBANI RESOURCES (ASX:TRE)
TRE has appointed Lycopodium Minerals to lead a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) update on its advanced Kobada gold project in southern Mali, which hosts 2.4Moz in predominantly free-digging oxide, open pittable gold resources.
The 2021 DFS outlined a +100,000oz per annum operation at a low US$972/oz AISC over the first 10 years, which TRE is confident of improving through its study work.
This DFS update will optimise the processing flowsheet and plant design, along with capital and operating estimates with the ultimate goal to boost the project’s gold output. The company expects the DFS update to be complete in Q1 2024.
