Lunchtime ASX small cap wrap: Who’s hitting the panic button today?
News
Heading into today’s trading session, the ASX had just lodged its worst five-day run since 2011.
At this point, surely a few buyers were ready to step in and buy the dip…right? Wrong.
The COVID-19 virus appears to be fast-becoming a global pandemic, and markets have officially hit the panic button.
World Health Organisation boss Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus stopped short of that assessment, but said the virus has “pandemic potential”.
Overnight, more new cases were reported outside of China branching out from the current epicentres of Italy and Iran.
That coincided with an all-out bloodbath on US markets, where the S&P500 crashed by more than 4 per cent.
In response, the ASX200 slumped by another 3.15 per cent in morning trade to 6,449 points. Since just last week, the index has now entered into a technical correction — defined as a fall of 10 per cent or more.
The ASX Small Ords fell even further, down 3.95 per cent to 2,736 points.
Amid a historic bout of selling, here’s the (smaller than usual) list of small caps that posted a gain in morning trade:

The deal covers a 2,180sqkm chunk of Antipa’s remaining ground in the Paterson, now known as the Wilki project.
As part of the agreement, Newcrest will also take a 9.9 per cent stake in Antipa by subscribing for $3.9m in shares at 1.7c per share — a 54 per cent premium to its last closing price.
