Lithium keeps finding another gear. The analysts at Citi lifted target forecasts after the Marrickville government and others besides prepare to throw some support behind electric vehicle uptake.
Shares in local lithium plays like Galan Lithium (ASX:GAL), jumped 5.6%, while the price of diversified large cap Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN) climbed over 3% to close near fresh record highs.
Citi earlier suggested lithium carbonate prices could top $US72,000 and that the electric vehicle sector is first among equals if the economy sags and stimmy comes back on the table.
Overnight in the states, stocks closed lower following another volatile session.
It wasn’t the worst Monday Wall Street’s produced this calendar year, although traders traded like they were back under the shadow of COVID now that China’s started reporting deaths from the virus. Oil prices fell. Resources stocks traded lower and commodities also took some stick.
At home, the ASX 200 index has risen as much as 0.7% after coal stocks took a rocket right on the back pocket continuing to rise and take the major exporters with it.
The ASX XEC Emerging Companies index has closed pretty much flat.

Besra Gold (ASX:BEZ) is going bonkers after reporting high and bonanza grade gold intercepts at Bekajang, within the Bau Limestone, in Indonesia.
Creso Pharma (ASX:CPH), says it’s done with dating ASIC.
The relationship was long and torrid and a little one-sided, with the securities watchdog penning a kind letter to tell Creso execs they’re “no longer persons of interest.” (sad face) In the investigation. (happy face).
Narryer Metals (ASX:NYM), has told the exchange its Ivar Prospect at the Rocky Gully project continues to show “strong mineralisation in both Total REE and “high value” Magnet REE. Assays from pulp samples have also returned solid results for scandium.
And finally, Southern Cross Gold (ASX:SXG) has ridden the coattails of a recent 305.8m @ 2.4g/t AuEq drill hit (hole SDDSC050) at the Sunday Creek gold-antimony project into a $16m cap raise.
As an indication of its popularity, the raise will be conducted at 58c per share – a 1.5% premium to the 15-day volume-weighted average price (VWAP) and a tiny 1.7% discount to the last traded price prior to the placement being announced.
