ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Who’s taking ‘healthy competition’ a little too far today?

Are there any 1990’s figure-skating fans among the Stockhead readership? If so, you may be familiar with Tonya Harding, who was implicated in an attack on her main rival Nancy Kerrigan which saw Kerrigan suffer a broken leg.

An eerily similar story emerged out of France overnight, where leading football player Aminata Diallo was arrested, in connection with allegations of an attack on her Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) teammate, Kheira Hamraoui.

Media reports indicate that Diallo was driving a group of players home from dinner, when a group of assailants dragged Hamraoui from the car and hit her across the legs with an iron bar.

While Hamraoui suffered cuts and bruises, she didn’t end up with any career-threatening injuries.

In a PSG game during the week, Diallo then assumed Hamraoui’s position in central midfield. Investigations by both police and the club are ongoing.

To markets, and the ASX 200 has followed Wall Street lower with a fall of around 1% into midday trade.

On a brighter note, the microcap Emerging Companies index outperformed with a gain of ~0.7%.

Falls at the big end of town followed a rocky session for US stocks after October CPI data showed that inflation continues to track at 30-year highs.

Mining stocks are shrugging off the threat of stubbornly high inflation, but the big banks fell sharply while the ASX 200 Energy index dropped more than 2%.

Shares in iron ore major Fortescue (ASX:FMG) ripped higher, despite another fall in the iron ore price overnight to below US$90/t.

Gains were again led by a hydrogen update, as Tlou Energy (ASX:TOU) ripped higher after announcing plans to generate green hydrogen at the Lesedi power project in Botswana.

The company and its technology partner, Synergen Met, “are working on combining large, established natural gas reserves with abundant solar energy to produce green hydrogen, thus providing a complementary range of cleaner and greener power generation options”, Tlou said.
