US biotech Moderna says its vaccine was ~94.5 per cent effective in preliminary analysis of a large, late-stage clinical trial, just seven days after Pfizer revealed a successful vaccine trial of its own.
This news, plus better-than-expected industrial data from China, saw Wall Street rally to record highs and European share markets hit their highest levels in more than eight months on Monday.
There are winners all over the shop.
Global oil prices advanced by up to three per cent.
Copper prices jumped to plus-two-year highs and aluminium touched its highest level since December 2018.
Iron ore rose 1.1 per cent to $US124.00 a tonne.
Even gold futures price edged higher by 0.1 per cent to $US1,887.80 an ounce.
But would the ASX – which confirmed that it would open at 10am as scheduled – actually work?
Yep. By 11:30am, the Aussie market had hit eight-month highs, with energy and travel stocks the clear standout.
The benchmark ASX 200 index has punched through 6,500 points for the first time since March this year. BPNL – and most tech stocks – are underperforming.
