Unicorns Podcast: Australian power play Sovereign AI launches

The Unicorns Podcast connects you to some of the best and brightest founders, CEOs, executives, business owners, innovators, entrepreneurs and inspiring leaders who make things happen and inspire others.

Host Justin Kelly – former broadcast journalist and PR veteran – chats with leaders from across Australia and internationally about business strategy, what it takes to build a successful company, how to overcome challenges and advice for those on a similar journey.

In this episode of The Unicorns Podcast, Justin talks with the founders of Sovereign Australia AI – a brand-new venture that’s setting out to do something bold – build a homegrown alternative to global AI platforms like ChatGPT.

Sovereign Australia AI has signed one of the largest orders for AI hardware in our nation’s history. It has also committed $10 million to pay copyright holders whose work is used in training, setting a world-first benchmark for ethical AI.

Their upcoming models, Ginan and Australis, will be trained on Australian-relevant data, run entirely onshore, and designed to reflect our values, our culture, and our laws.

Joining Justin are co-founders Simon Kriss, a globally recognised AI strategist and advisor, and Dr Troy Neilson, who holds a PhD in AI and machine learning and has more than 20 years of experience commercialising technology solutions.

Together, they unpack why they believe the future of AI in Australia must be ethical, sovereign, and transparent, and why this launch could be a game-changer for businesses, institutions, and everyday Australians alike.
