High Voltage: We need to invest US$1.6tn to meet battery demand for 2040

Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium.
It’s no secret that to plug the gap between battery industry demand and supply we need more investment but the actual numbers are astounding.
Benchmark Minerals Intelligence says to meet 2040 battery demand we’ll need a massive $1.6 trillion of investment.
That’s almost triple the $571 billion needed just to meet 2030 demand, because battery demand is set to double for the decade from 2030 to 2040 – that’s after its forecast growth from 937 gigawatt hours last year to 3.7 terawatt hours in 2030.
Of this 2040 investment, 44% is needed to build the battery gigafactories that produce the battery cells and assemble the packs, BMI says.
Of the critical raw materials, lithium will require the largest investment of $94 billion to meet 2030 demand, and double that to meet 2040 demand.
And BMI says that’s just the base case scenario.
“If the ambitious targets set out by policymakers and industry are all to be met, this investment number will need to increase even further,” BMI said.
Here’s how a basket of ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, magnesium, manganese, and vanadium is performing>>>

MTM announced a ‘significant breakthrough’ in the development of its Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology, which has successfully converted SC6 spodumene concentrate directly to lithium chloride (LiCl) in a single, acid-free unit operation.
The company says this innovation has the potential to revolutionise lithium refining by radically simplifying the processing of spodumene, the primary source of lithium for batteries.
The process promises substantial reductions in CAPEX, OPEX, and emissions, marking a significant leap forward for the industry.
And at a time when the global lithium-ion battery market is projected to reach over US$150 billion by 2030, it also represents a major commercial opportunity for MTM with the single step process reducing production time, enabling the rapid conversion of raw spodumene to market-ready LiCl.
“We are excited about the commercial opportunities this presents and are actively engaging with major industry players to explore collaboration opportunities,” CEO Michael Walshe said.
The company has knocked back Core Lithium (ASX:CXO) on a $6.5 million bid, with its Bynoe project the prize that could have bulked up Core’s control of the lithium field in the NT, near its Finniss lithium operations.
Core reportedly lobbed a non-binding all-share offer which valued Charger at 8.4c.
Charger’s intention was to trade on the Bynoe project solely, a strategic process it says is ongoing.
“The view of the CHR Board is that the terms currently provided in the Core NBIO do not fully reflect the Company’s value and prospects. The Charger Board remains open to continuing engagement with Core should it wish to do so, with the view to pursuing the best outcome for Charger shareholders,” the company said.
Charger, which owns 70% of Bynoe alongside 30% owner Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT), also has an exploration partnership with Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) over ground in the Lake Johnston lithium district.
The Canadian-based lithium explorer says sterilisation drilling at the Adina lithium project in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay region of Quebec, Canada has tested mineralisation outside of the current resource – with results including 15.3m at 3.30% Li2O from 179.2m.
“These new drilling results from Adina demonstrate the shallow, high-grade mineralisation extending along the entire strike length from the west of Adina, in the Ridge area and Adina SW, through Adina Main to Adina East and remains open to the east,” MD Chris Evans said.
“In fact, the intersections in the furthest holes to the east of the property are among the best recent intersections and provide encouragement for further drilling to be completed at Adina East.”
“Drilling at Adina is now refocussing to test the continuity and grade of mineralisation outside the current MRE, along the 3.1km of mineralisation defined in drilling to date at Adina, in parallel with on ground activities designed to identify and advance new targets for drilling in the forthcoming winter season.”
