• It’s a critical minerals fire sale for investment in the NT, and its government is on board
  • Vanadium is hot. When wasn’t it though? It’s used in rockets
  • And Nolans looks like it’s shaping up to become Australia’s next big REE producer, for reals

Our High Voltage column wraps the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, manganese, magnesium, and vanadium.

As Territorians wait with bated breath for the iconic Jervois copper mine – this time being developed by Singapore-backed KGL Resources (ASX:KGL) – to kick back into action after a long hiatus, elsewhere the region is aplomb with activity from explorers and developers proving up critical minerals.

Hot commodities such as Tivan’s (ASX:TVN) vanadium; Core Lithium (ASX:CXO) with the only producing lithium mine outside WA, Finniss; Kingsland Minerals’ (ASX:KNG) graphite play and Arafura Rare Earths’ (ASX:ARU) self-explanatory Nolans project are veritably littered underneath the surface in the NT’s 1.8 billion-year-old Paleoproterozoic provinces and basins.

Speaking to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) recently, NT deputy chief minister Nicole Manison said its government is working hard to support regional exploration and development.

“The mining sector provides significant economic contributions and employment opportunities, especially in our remote regions [and] capitalising on our natural resources while their demand grows worldwide is a priority,” Manison said.

“Critical minerals will help tackle climate change and reduce emissions globally through the technologies they support. They are also crucial to Australia’s defence, and their supply chains must be secured.

“There’s huge potential for mineral-rich nations to lead this journey, which presents an incredible opportunity for Australia, and especially for the NT, where these minerals are economically proven, produced and exported.”

Apart from the usual suspects, Manison noted that the NT contains a number of other highly sought-after, yet lesser-known elements: antimony, bismuth, gallium, germanium, helium, high-purity alumina, niobium, platinum-group elements, scandium, silicon, tantalum and tin.

We’ve got a few NT-focused miners that are doing the biz at the moment, but first:

Kingsland Minerals (ASX:KNG)

After listing on the ASX just 11 months ago, KNG is killing it in the NT lately, where an exploration target – based on historic drilling, sampling and reconnaissance work – helped shore up an extra $92,500 in funding from the government to help progress its Leliyn graphite project.

KNG has a large exploration target of 200-250Mt for Leliyn, grading between 8%-11% total graphitic carbon (TGC) for 16-27Mt of contained graphite, which would easily qualify it as a globally significant tier one asset in a tier one location.

The explorer has also embarked on a large-scale 3,200m RC and diamond drilling program with the first four holes already having intersected up to 150m, both at the eastern and western ends of its 5km long target.

“We would like to thank the NT Government for its support of our exploration program at Leliyn,” KNG MD Richard Maddocks said.

“The funding will help us drill four important holes as part of our strategy to establish a maiden JORC resource in the area where we have already established a big exploration target and identified the presence of an extensive graphitic schist.”

Arafura Rare Earths (ASX:ARU)

It’s a project with legs, that’s for sure – especially weathering COVID-induced stalls in recent times.

Those times are over though, and the ~$710m market-capped REE developer has much to gain for itself, and the world by bringing Nolans into production.

Nolans’ scope is huge; encompassing a mine, full-stack processing plant and embedded infrastructure to become the world’s leading neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) producer.

Recently, it signed an offtake agreement with Siemens Gamesa to provide 200 tonnes per annum (tpa) of lucrative NdPr metal over a five-year term, increasing to 400tpa once Nolans achieves nameplate production capacity.

That’s on the back of a November 2022 deal with Hyundai too.

On top of that, the company has also entered into an agreement with Minhub Operations (MOPL) and FYI Resources (ASX:FYI) to construct a mineral sands processing hub in Darwin.

But wait, there’s more. The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) provided non-binding “in principle” support to increase its tranche of project finance debt from $100 million to $150 million last quarter.

Hmm. o_O!

Production at Nolans is set to commence in 2026.

Tivan (ASX:TVN)

TVN – which took over from TNG as the vanguard of the Mount Peake vanadium-titanium project – has bought, and brought with it a few extras in the form of cutting-edge minerals processing tech and a penchant to commercialise extraction value with strategic partners such as the CSIRO.

Upon takeover, the company also identified Speewah, a nearby deposit with higher grades (so it bought it for a cool $20m) and is implementing the deposit as its primary asset, with Mount Peake to provide a facilitator role for project development.

Speewah is said to contain a measured, indicated and inferred resource of 4.7 billion tonnes at 0.3% vanadium oxide, 14.7% iron and 3.3% titanium oxide, making it possibly the largest vanadium-in-titanomagnetite resources in the world.

Vanadium, a hard element used in space vehicles, nuclear reactors, aircraft carriers and recently in batteries to store renewable energy, looks like it’s ready to push into the mainstream.

It’s not a hard sell, and neither is its marketability. Yet what remains to be seen is how vanadium can burgeon its own demand into a market that’s shifting from fossil fuels into the current lithium boom.

You know what? Perhaps it’s the next one off the rank. See you in the NT.
