NGOs urge Musk to bypass ‘dirty’ Indonesian nickel

Apparently (we couldn’t find it prior to deadline) an open letter was sent to Elon Musk by a bunch of Non Gov Orgs asking him to NOT invest in Indonesian nickel due to environmental concerns.

If Tesla, which needs ~26% of projected nickel supply by 2030, refuses to invest in Indonesian nickel, that’s a big deal for everyone.

The country is a dominant global producer.

These environment concerns aren’t a new phenomenon and last year we wrote about this exact thing.

But Elon also said this, about two years ago:

 

California, which produces no lithium yet, will start taxing its production from 2023

Okay then.

A new tax on lithium extraction in Cali will go into effect next year, charging companies between $US400-$US800 for each tonne of carbonate mined out of the brine-rich Salton Sea.

Thing is, while there are estimates the sea could produce ~600,000tpa of lithium carbonate, nothing is being mined yet.

There are three main companies testing or scaling up projects in the Salton Sea – Controlled Thermal Resources, EnergySource and Berkshire Hathaway Renewables.

If these companies hit their respective production deadlines (which mine developers hardly ever do) Controlled Thermal Resources and Berkshire will be in commercial production in 2024. We couldn’t find a production deadline for privately held geothermal energy play EnergySource.

The cries of ‘not fair!’ are coming thick and fast from some of these cos, with EnergySource CEO Eric Spomer recently telling Reuters his company had halted discussions with potential financiers and a major automaker.

“If this passes, we will fight it or we will leave,” he said at the time, dramatically.

 

EVs will be more profitable than ICE within two years, Porsche says

Porsche believes its will only take two years for its EVs to become more profitable than the incumbent ICE range.

Porsche expects EVs to account for ~50% of the luxury car market by 2030. The German automaker is aiming for 80% of its sales to be fully electric by 2031.

Competitor Jaguar is aiming for ~27% EV sales by 2024-2025, scaling up to 60% by the end of the decade. In 2021-2022 just 3% of its sales were electric.

 

Meanwhile, Ford will need 20% of the world’s tier one batteries by 2026

Is that even possible?

Currently, Ford has secured contracts for 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) of annual battery capacity, enough for 600,000 EVs per annum by late 2023.

It says it has already sourced 70% of battery capacity to support its 2 million+ annual EV global run rate by 2026.
