Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, manganese, magnesium, and vanadium.
“I’m Morgan Stanley and you may remember me from such lithium price crash predictions as the winter of 2018.”
Being fair to MS, one of the many maligned big investment banks lashed by the industry for contrarian bear takes on lithium pricing, its 2018 prediction did come true with a wave of supply from hard rock mines in Australia forcing some into insolvency as prices cratered.
But lithium is now worth more than ever before, leaving many to wonder just where the top is.
MS’ commodities team think demand will decelerate in China, the crucible of the battery metals and electric vehicle industries, with its EV penetration rate among new car sales already over 20%.
An overproduction of stockpiled batteries may also have chewed up 85,000t of lithium carbonate equivalent demand this year. MS expects the market deficit to slide from 90,000t LCE this year to 15,000t LCE in 2023, with Chinese lithium carbonate prices to fall to US$67,500/t in the first half and US$47,500/t in the second half of 2023.
That’s around a 35% downside on current prices. Longer term, MS sees a 22% shortfall in lithium supply by 2030.
Fastmarkets reported the domestic lithium carbonate price in China overnight down 17,500 Yuan to RMB580,000/t. That’s equivalent to around US$80,700/t, a price point that will hardly have lithium miners shaking in their boots. At the same time Fastmarkets’ China hydroxide assessment lifted 5000 Yuan to RMB590,000/t (~US$82,200/t).
“Trading activity remained slow in the year-end and market participants remained cautious amid recent weakness in domestic Chinese market,” Fastmarkets price assessors said.

Whether analysts or miners like Ken Brinsden, who told Stockhead the big banks are disconnected from the battery market, are right remains to be seen.
What there is little doubt of is that demand for lithium and electric vehicle components will grow over the coming decades.
One of former Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) MD Brinsden’s big points on the lithium market is there will be strong demand for spodumene produced in jurisdictions like Canada, where he is the non-executive chair of Quebec explorer Patriot Battery Metals (ASX:PMT).
That will come from the growth of a US EV and battery supply chain that remains completely reliant on Asian materials, mostly out of China, to support its growth and meet the Biden Administration’s emissions reduction targets.
A new US$3.2 billion battery cathode facility in Tennessee announced by South Korea’s LG Chem could double North America’s cathode capacity inside five years, bringing 120,000t of capacity to the local Yankee market by 2027.
With construction beginning in only a few months and first production in H2 2025, that’s enough to produce NCMA (nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminium) cathode for 1.2 million electric vehicles.
The plant will help LG Chem supply US auto giant General Motors, which will take 950,000t of cathode active material from the South Korean supplier by the end of the decade.
GM wants to produce 1 million battery EVs annually by 2025, targeting US$50 billion in EV revenue, and says it has all the materials locked up to do that. It’s got a fair way to go.
Its current all-electric models, the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUVs, captured 8% of the US EV market in the third quarter, with production increasing from 44,000 in 2022 to 70,000 units next year.
But it expects to have “multiple entries” in the pickup, SUV and luxury segmenta making up 70% of the EV market by 2025 and plans to enter full production of its BrightDrop EV delivery van next year.

Nico hit the bourse back in January this year and is one of the handful of FY22 IPOs trading above its IPO price for 2022.
The company recently completed 10,192m of reverse circulation drilling at the Central Musgrave Project where the Wingellina portion of the program had been focused on improving the definition of the highest-grade nickel and cobalt zones within the entire resource base.
NC1 says drilling these previously defined high-grade pits is expected to provide data for mine scheduling and should enhance the early stage cashflows of the project.
Completing this program represents a key value input driver for the DFS, which will begin in 2023.
Once all data is returned and validated, a resource model update will be completed for the Wingellina deposit.
The lateritic deposit sits next to a remote indigenous community in the Ngaayatjarra Lands and has been known about since the mid-1950s.
But there is some indication the emerging market for nickel as a battery metal will support previously uneconomic nickel and base metals deposits, with BHP (ASX:BHP) target OZ Minerals (ASX:OZL) recently approving, with the blessing of traditional owners, the $1.7 billion construction of the West Musgrave project, also in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.
Junior mining investors are going crazy for rare earths right now, the tasty little ingredients that most notably go into permanent magnets for EVs and wind turbines. Think of them as the saffron of the battery metals market.
WA explorer Mamba bolted out the gates Monday after entering an option agreement to purchase REE rights over four exploration licences covering an area of 561km2 surrounding Western Australia’s wheatbelt town of Hyden.
Mamba also applied for an additional five ELs covering a total of 755km2, bringing the total area covered by the Hyden Project to over 1,300km2.
M24 says a zone of very high grade rare earths has already been identified in clays from early sampling.
“Given most clay hosted REO mineralisation tends to be between 800 and 2,000ppm TREO, to have identified a zone of 46,700ppm, or 4.67 per cent TREO in clays from the very limited sampling represents a very compelling target,” M24 managing director Mike Dunbar said.
“The preliminary technical due diligence completed so far has also identified a significant gravity anomaly just to the east of the area of limited REE sampling, which suggests there is significant potential in the area, not just for clay hosted REE deposits but hard rock REE potential as well.”
