High Voltage: Battery materials players wind back expansion plans as EV demand slows

- German chemicals maker BASF abandons lithium investment plans
- World’s biggest battery maker CATL pushes ahead with expansion plans
Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium.
Last week it was lithium players looking at reducing output off the back of sluggish prices and this week its battery material producers like Belgium’s Umicore winding back expansion plans, according to Bloomberg Hyperdrive.
Umicore is delaying construction of a C$2.8bn (A$3.08bn) cathode materials plant in Canada which was expected to open by 2026 and supply battery materials for up to 800,000 electric vehicles annually.
The company is now projecting two more years of losses at its battery materials division.
Umicore, which has a joint venture with Volkswagen, is following the likes of automakers like Tesla, General Motors and Porsche in rethinking their EV outlook against a backdrop of slowing demand – even though the long-term EV outlook is fairly positive.
Back in June, Umicore said it was starting to reassess its new projects around the world due to the EV slowdown and manufacturers’ ongoing reviews of investment plans.
“In recent months, short and medium-term growth projections for the electric vehicles market have been scaled back substantially, significantly affecting Umicore’s battery materials business,” Umicore CEO Bart Sap said.
“The large impairment of our Battery Materials assets is painful and reflects the changed situation as we see it today.
“In the coming months, we will continue to thoroughly reassess our battery materials activities, with energy and an open mind, always in close alignment with our customers and partners.”
And they’re not the only battery producer slowing down.
Earlier this month German chemicals maker BASF abandoned plans to invest in lithium mining assets in Chile.
They also scrapped a planned $2.6 billion nickel-cobalt project in Indonesia with France’s Eramet – which last week lowered its planned capital expenditure for an Argentinian lithium project after postponing the start of construction on a second plant until next year.
On the flipside, the world’s biggest battery maker, China’s CATL, is pushing ahead with expansion plans after reporting a rise in second-quarter net income last week.

Weekly Small Cap Standouts
RMX has appointed its exploration team for the maiden exploration program at Flicka Lake, one of its four Fry Lake gold projects in Canada adjacent to the historic Pickle Lake gold Mining district.
A sampling program is scheduled to commence mid-August and is expected to take a month to complete with assay results due in September, with a drilling program is planned in parallel.
The company believes the projects have the potential to host gold lode mineralisation based on targeting and the known deposits in the broader area.
AAJ has turned up with very high grades of copper from historical surface samples taken by international miners Sumitomo and Anglo American at its recently acquired exploration license of the Fiery Creek project in QLD.
Grades of up to 36% copper were found at multiple prospects across the project area, with the company confident there’s high prospectivity for an economic resource within the fertile Mt Isa copper belt.
“The underexplored nature of the project area combined with the positive historic results and favourable geological setting in the prolific Mt Isa minerals district provide an exciting exploration opportunity for Aruma,” MD Glenn Grayson said.
A detailed review of past exploration at the company’s Doolgunna project in WA has flagged several gold mineralised shear zones at the Vulcan and the Goodin Fault prospects.
Geological Consultant Ed Baltis, a specialist in Archaean gold exploration, has reviewed ENT’s previous vertical aircore drilling program which tested the Vulcan gold soil anomaly, and other drill holes which tested the Goodin Fault.
His review and interpretation of the auriferous shear zones, supported by magnetic imagery, suggest that the company’s earlier holes, and Sandfire’s southeasterly angled aircore holes have not adequately tested the gold potential of the region.
Further AC drilling is required to infill the broad 200-800m spaced sections that currently define the Goodin gold trend, semi-continuous over some 10km in a NE-SW orientation.
The final batch of assays from Fin’s maiden drilling program at the White Bear prospect at the Cancet West project in Canada has returned grades of up to 3.27% Li2O.
Eight diamond drill-holes were completed for a total of 1,009m and the company has confirmed spodumene crystals within an albite-quartz pegmatite zone over a strike of 275m.
Observations are the pegmatites appear to be relatively flat-lying, shallow dipping to the north-west, and open along strike and at depth.
FIN says it’s positive for the prospect, since it would imply a low strip ratio – should an economic deposit be defined in the future.
