Great Southern has built up its credibility as a successful gold explorer in Western Australia and is now looking to apply its expertise to its Queensland assets.
After all, its exploration efforts in Australia’s largest state have delivered some notable successes such as the discovery of gold 200m south of known gold mineralisation at Southern Star as well as discovering evidence of widespread mineralisation across its Duketon Belt tenements.
Great Southern Mining (ASX:GSN) has achieved this by going back to the basics and investing in grassroots exploration such as the surface moving-loop electromagnetic (MLEM) survey that is currently underway at its East Laverton project in WA.
The survey, which will be carried out using a 1,200m by 1,200m spacing covering 70sqkm, targets the Diorite Hill layered ultramafic magmatic intrusion that has the potential to host large nickel sulphide deposits of the magmatic type, a style of mineralisation that has been popularised by the discovery of the Nova-Bollinger deposit in 2012.
Queensland dreaming
The company is now taking this expertise and taking it across the continent to the Edinburgh Park project in northern Queensland, another established gold district.
Edinburgh Park is a greenfields exploration project that comprises seven exploration permits for minerals covering about 1,000 sq km that surround Evolution Mining’s (ASX:EVN) 1.7 million ounce equivalent Mt Carlton Mine.
Despite this, the area is considered to be under-explored with only minor exploration activities carried out over the past 15 years since the discovery of Mt Carlton.
The project is considered to be prospective for porphyry copper-molybdenum, intrusive related gold systems (IRGS) deposits and epithermal gold-silver deposits.
Additional processing of hyperspectral data that Great Southern had acquired together with Evolution Mining back in 2019 had identified 19 illumination targets consistent with porphyry mineralisation alteration systems.
Three of these are considered to be high priority targets due to the scale of the alteration zones – up to 2km long – evident in data.
A full-time team from the company is currently on the ground working up drill targets such as Leichhardt Creek, Fish Creek, Edinburgh Castle, Fish Creek, Molongle and Mt Dillion in 2022.
This evaluation is aimed at progressing each target from the target generation stage to the target definition stage and then drill testing stage as quickly as possible on the basis of the technical merits of each target.
