Great Northern has kicked off reverse circulation drilling targeting extensions to known high-grade gold mineralisation at its Golden Cup deposit in northern Queensland.
The 1,100m program will follow on successful drilling completed in 2019 that returned results such as 7m grading 7.5 grams per tonne (g/t) gold from 32m and 9m at 4.7g/t gold from 42m in a bid to further grow the Golden Ant project resource base.
Great Northern Minerals (ASX:GNM) expects the drill program to take about two weeks to complete with assays expected between four to six weeks after the program’s end.
“We are excited to commence drilling at Golden Cup for what is essentially a repeat of the successful campaign at the nearby Camel Creek project last year,” managing director Cameron McLean said.
“We see a real potential to define further mineralisation to the existing high grade results we achieved which led to our very first JORC resource.”
Historical gold production
Golden Cup is located on ML 4536 and is part of the company’s Golden Ant project.
The historical heap leach operation produced about 200,000t of oxide ore grading 2.8g/t gold from nine open pits with an average pit depth of less than 15m.
Mineralisation is open along strike and at depth with the current drilling program designed to test at depth, below any previous drilling, the mineralised structures which host the gold in the open pits at Golden Cup.
Golden Cup currently has a resource of 300,000t grading 3.4g/t gold and an exploration target of between 50,000oz and 132,000oz per 100m of vertical extent.
