Infinity Lithium’s metallurgical testwork has successfully scaled up production of battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide.
The production of lithium chemicals using material taken from the San Jose project was carried out to fulfil feasibility study requirements and to ensure sufficient samples of end products for verification and advancement of offtake discussions.
Infinity Lithium (ASX:INF) says the pilot-scale testwork has confirmed the scalability of the process emerging from the bench-scale test work while the successful production of lithium hydroxide marks the end point of the testing under its agreement with EIT InnoEnergy.
It will also advance provisional patents relating to the novel aspects of the sulphate roast process flowsheet.

“The production of battery grade lithium hydroxide in the scale-up phase has highlighted the successful implementation of the innovative sulphate roast process in alignment to key EU ESG principles,” managing director Ryan Parkin said.
“We are looking forward to broadening discussions with end users in the progression of a fully integrated lithium-ion battery supply chain in Spain and the EU.”
Tranche 3 funding totalling €200,000 ($318,266.70) under the project agreement with EIT InnoEnergy will be committed upon completion of reporting and verification.
Greener lithium chemical production
Infinity says its sulphate roast and water leach process, which includes recirculation of key reagents, significantly reduces the environmental impact of the lithium chemical conversion process when compared to traditional sulphuric acid leaching practices.
The sustainable production of battery grade lithium carbonate and hydroxide and decarbonisation of the conversion process will be a massive advantage in EU markets.
The growing, and lucrative demand out of the European Union requires regulatory and compliance when it comes to the measurement of the carbon footprint of all materials used in lithium-ion batteries, putting Infinity in a strong position.
