The world’s largest oilfield contractor, Schlumberger, is partnering with Massachusetts Institute of Technology spin-off and developer of water treatment facilities – Gradient – to lower the consumption of fresh water and reduce wastewater in the production process for battery grade lithium.
As part of Schlumberger’s NeoLith Energy direct lithium extraction (DLE) and production flowsheet, Gradiant technology is used to concentrate the lithium solution and generate fresh water—a critical element in sustainable lithium production from brine.
According to the company, the technology enables high levels of lithium concentration in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods, while also reducing carbon emissions, energy consumption, and capital costs when compared to thermal-based technologies.
This technology integration – which is already used in copper and nickel mines, can be applied into new lithium mineral extraction and production sites, opening opportunities to untapped lithium production regions, as well as existing lithium production operations.
“Proper natural resource management is essential in mineral production, and nowhere more so than in lithium,” said Gavin Rennick, president of Schlumberger’s New Energy business.
“The unprecedented growth in demand for this critical mineral requires high-quality production without compromising sustainability.
“We are excited to be working with Schlumberger, with whom we are pioneering a new era of sustainable mineral resource recovery,” he adds.
“This is made possible by Gradiant’s deep understanding of the complex chemistry that underlies the production processes, which is then operationalised by machine learning and digital technology.”

22 lithium companies finished in the green, 60 tumbled into the red zone, and 49 fell flat.
Who’s got news out?
Core Lithium is ramping up to steady state production at its Finniss Lithium Project in Australia’s Northern Territory which is set to be the country’s only lithium mine outside of WA.
The company revealed today the mine has officially opened and will produce 175,000tpa over an initial 10 year life, with 80% of its initial output to be sold via off-take deals to Chinese majors Ganfeng and Yahua.
Core has already demonstrated its potential to extend the resource and mine life at Finniss, bumping it up to 12 years after an upgrade back in July.
Finniss is on target to export Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) lithium by the end of this year following the first sale of Spodumene DSO product announced on October 3.
Shares in AM7 are up some 16% on news of further drilling at its Bitterwasser Lithium-in-Clay Project in Namibia where the company has intersected the first of its 14 pans, the Madube Pan.
AM7 CEO Philip le Roux says it is very encouraging that, from observations of the core of our first auger hole at the Madube Pan, the lithology and thicknesses are comparable to those intersected at the Lithium enriched Eden Pan, where Arcadia has recently increased the Lithium-in-Clay resource over the Bitterwasser Pans district.
“Should analyses confirm lithium mineralisation to a similar tenor than what we saw at the Eden Lithium Pan, we’d expect to see an increase of the current JORC resource over the Bitterwasser Lithium-in-Clay Project.”
Auger drilling has now commenced on the Madube Pan with a total of 15 holes planned as part of an exploratory third phase drilling program.
A 25% increase in lithium grades at the Cane Creek 32-1 well within the wider Paradox Lithium Project in Utah, USA has been achieved following the delivery of assay results recording up to 101ppm lithium and 3,294ppm bromine.
These assays were not only delivered through the entire drilled zone in the Mississippian Units at Cane Creek 32-1 well but confirm that the massive, supersaturated brine aquifer in the Mississippian Units are rich with both lithium and bromine.
The brines are similar to those of the previously sampled Clastic Zones where an indicated and inferred JORC resource has already been estimated.
Anson has now received approvals to commence its Western Expansion strategy, which will see it target the Sunburst 1 and Mineral Canyon Fed 1-3 wells within the Project area.
A binding agreement has been executed with Landore Resources to buyback and extinguish 50% (1.5%) of the 3% net smelter royalty (NSR) interest over the Root Project.
The consideration for the purchase is comprised of C$2 million cash payment to extinguish 1.5% of the Root Project NSR.
The transaction is conditional on GT1 and Landore finalising and executing an extinguishment agreement, which is expected to occur before 21 October 2022.
KAI says it has made a “highly promising start” to its first lithium drill program after intersecting 5m of pegmatite in the first hole and intersecting 2-3m pegmatite intervals in two other holes at Lucky Sump.
In light of these results, the company says further RC holes are being planned at Lucky Sump and at Zakanaka, 2km north of Lucky Sump.
LPD has announced an entitlement offer to raise up to $11.7m.
Lepidico’s near term strategic imperatives include extending project life at the Karibib Lithium Project in Namibia to over 20 years, complete FEED works to allow lenders to finalise their due diligence and secure a full funding solution to transition Phase 1 into construction, thereby positioning it as an early mover for this lithium price cycle.
Funds will be used to complete both Phase 1 Project Front End Engineering and Design and lender due diligence, and to start critical path Stage 2 EPCM works for both the concentrator and chemical plant.
