All your ASX lithium news for Friday, September 2

Earlier this week Piedmont Lithium (ASX:PLL) listed on the NASDAQ and the company hasn’t wasted any time kicking off its plans in the US – today announcing that Etowah in Tennessee will be the location of its 30,000 metric ton per year (tpy) LHP2 lithium hydroxide operation by 2025.

To put that in context, current total US production of lithium hydroxide – a key component in EV batteries – is just 15,000tpy.

Adding the company’s planned Carolina Lithium operation to this, brings PLL’s estimated total US-based production capacity of 60,000tpy by 2026.

“The rapid electrification of the automotive market has led to massive investments in electric vehicle and lithium-ion battery production in the United States, creating a critical need for lithium hydroxide produced in the US,” PLL president and CEO Keith Phillips says.

“Our Tennessee Lithium operation should play an important role in helping to mitigate supply shortages in the American EV industry and battery supply chain, particularly in the wake of recent legislation incentivising the use of domestically sourced critical materials and providing tax credits for US producers.”

Piedmont plans to invest approximately $600 million in the development of the operation, which will be built with the Metso:Outotec process that eliminates the acid-leaching of spodumene and the production sodium sulphate waste – and would make it one of the world’s most sustainable plants.

The Definitive Feasibility Study for the project expected by the end of 2022.

Who has news out today?

POWER MINERALS (ASX:PNN)

The company is set to kick off resource definition drilling at its Salta lithium project in Argentina in the next two weeks – with the aim of upgrading the existing JORC Mineral Resource.

Drilling will commence with two holes for 1,000m at the Incahuasi Salar, and is designed to deliver a maiden JORC Mineral Resource at this target.

It will then progress to the Pocitos and Rincon salares with the aim of delivering a maiden resource and expanding the existing resource, respectively.

TAMBOURAH METALS (ASX:TMB)

This explorer says rock chip sampling has returned assay grades of up to 1,420ppm lithium at the Russian Jack Project in the Pilbara.

Further mapping will be undertaken to define the full extent of the pegmatites at this location and to identify new locations in conjunction with analysis of the available hyperspectral dataset.

TMB has also been granted two new exploration licences (ELs) at Russian Jack, which takes its landholding to around 250km2 of tenure prospective for lithium bearing pegmatites.

“The initial pegmatites sampled from Russian Jack are very encouraging and demonstrate the potential of the tenure to host pegmatite swarms,” executive chairperson Rita Brooks said.

“The Split Rocks Supersuite is the engine room of the East Pilbara for the emplacement of pegmatites and the granting of these two exploration licences will provide the impetus for accelerated lithium exploration within this large tenement package.

“The granting of these tenements enables Tambourah to implement the planned project scale exploration program that commences with the analysis of hyperspectral data leading to site location and sampling of prospective pegmatites and culminating in drilling targets.”

CONSOLIDATED ZINC (ASX:CZL)

After recently picking up WestOz Lithium and its 1,000km2 of tenements prospective for lithium mineralisation, CZL says its exploration program has been approved for the Pilbara lithium project.

Field staff have been sourced for three crews over a nine-week exploration program that will have a staggered commencement from mid to late-September 2022.

“CZL’s Pilbara Project will be systematically, geologically and geochemically evaluated over the next three months by three geological teams, with the goal of locating and sampling LCT pegmatites containing lithium mineralisation in the form of spodumene minerals,” MD Brad Marwood said.

“The intent is to develop individual targets as rapidly as possible, to enable Heritage Surveys to be conducted and drill evaluation to commence with the arrival of the drilling season in April 2023.”

Four of the five Exploration Lease Applications (ELAs) have now been granted, with the company expecting the remaining application in the Marble Bar region to be granted shortly.

METALICITY (ASX:MCT)

Historical samples at the company’s Mt Surprise Lithium Project have identify ‘significant’ copper mineralisation at surface over a 5km strike.

The mineralisation includes a rock chip sample containing 27.5% copper and gold mineralisation of up to 1.32g/t.

It’s quite the bonus for MCT who secured Mt Surprise for its lithium potential with high grade rock chips up to 3.55% Li2O – and it turns out it’s also highly prospective for copper and other metals in tenure that remains sparsely explored.

Metalicity plans to head to site in the next two weeks for follow up exploration works.

INFINITY LITHIUM (ASX:IMF)

The company has welcomed the announcement from the Regional Government of Extremadura in Spain that lithium extraction and processing is of regional and general interest.

The granting of any concession of the exploitation of lithium resources in Extremadura will be conditional on the project incorporating downstream metallurgical and mineral processing in the region.

“San José is a world class and large-scale integrated lithium project built on the foundations of a very significant hard rock lithium resource,” Extremadura New Energies CEO Ramón Jiménez said.

“The progressive vision of the government ensures the feedstock at San José is aligned to the strategic interests of the region through an integrated facility that has become the blueprint for all lithium projects in Extremadura.”
