Researchers from the University of Queensland have developed a nanotechnology that more than doubles the lifespan of high-voltage Li-ion batteries.

Professor Lianzhou Wang and his team from the School of Chemical Engineering and Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology have designed a unique atomic-thin layer on the surface of a high-voltage cathode, which is the source of lithium ions and a critical aspect that limits the cycle life in a battery.

They’ve demonstrated a battery which remains stable for more than 1000 charge/discharge cycles. They usually only last several hundred cycles.

“Our process will increase the life-span of batteries in many things from smart phones and laptops to power tools and electric vehicles,” Professor Wang said.

“Corrosion in one form or another is the reason that batteries degrade over time.

“This new approach features a minimal protective coating at a scalable process, paving the way for the deployment of these abundant high-voltage materials for next generation high energy batteries.”

Professor Wang said with industry under increasing pressure to decarbonise, the development of lithium-ion batteries of lower cost, higher energy density and longer cycle life was vitally important – and he is confident the nanotech will have widespread applications across industry, including in electric vehicles.

Who’s got news out today?

SAYONA (ASX:SYA)

This near-term lithium miner owns advanced exploration assets in Canada’s Quebec province, where it recently announced a doubling of the Authier and North American Lithium projects’ combined resource to 119.1 Mt at 1.05% Li2O at the start of March.

Today, SYA told investors that lithium from ‘Authier’  performed as well, if not better than the incumbent suppliers in battery test work.

“Sayona has committed to downstream processing in Québec, including lithium carbonate or hydroxide,” the company says.

“These results by an industry‐leading battery tester have further increased confidence in our strategy, which will deliver added value for all stakeholders and support North America’s decarbonisation drive.”

SYA recently joined a wave of lithium stocks like Lake Resources (ASX:LKE)AVZ Minerals (ASX:AVZ) and Core Lithium (ASX:CXO) in the ASX 300 index.

Entry into major indices like the ASX 300 and ASX 200 can spur price rises and sharp volume increases for new entrants.

DREADNOUGHT (ASX:DRE)

RC drilling at the company’s Nelson and Trafalgar copper-lead-zinc-silver prospects, part of the Illaara Project in WA, has also intersected several thick (10-34m) pegmatites.

DRE interprets them to be a combination of flat lying and subvertical fertile Lithium-Caesium-Tantalum (LCT) pegmatites, which extend the Peggy Sue LCT pegmatite swarm 500m further east.

GOLDEN STATE MINING (ASX:GSM)

The company has secured an extensive greenfields project in WA’s Murchison region that is prospective for both lithium and base metals.

The company can also lock down more of the region with three additional tenement applications pending.

Project-scale lithium targeting work has already commenced on the new, underexplored tenure of the entire project area while work is underway to assess the interpreted base metal potential corridor on the western part of the Payne’s Find North tenements.

GSM plans to carry out further reconnaissance and initial soil sampling work in the coming weeks.

ZENITH MINERALS (ASX:ZNC)

Drilling at the company’s Split Rocks project in WA has returned wide, high-grade lithium mineralisation at the Rio pegmatite target of:

  • 20m at 1.0% Li2O, including 10m at 1.7% Li2O high-grade lithium mineralisation confirmed as eucryptite based on XRD analysis.

The lithium drill campaign is part of a larger initiative under the Zenith Lithium Joint Venture with EV Metals Group, whereby EVM may earn a 60% interest in the lithium rights in two initial 100% owned Zenith projects Waratah Well and Split Rocks by sole funding the completion of a feasibility study within 24 months, with Zenith retaining a 40% project share.

“These results confirm the highly prospective nature of our very large landholdings that sit along trend from the Wesfarmers-SQM Mt Holland lithium mine that is currently under construction,” MD Mick Clifford said.

A major expansion of the drill program at Rio is in the planning phase with permits submitted for a further 50 RC/diamond drill holes.

CORE LITHIUM (ASX:CXO)

Development of the company’s Finniss Lithium Project in the NT continues to run according to schedule, with the establishment of access roads and water pipelines, while water management infrastructure, administration areas and communication facilities well advanced.

Core says the dense media separation (DMS) process plant pad, which is due for completion in April 2022, will pave the way for Primero Group to commence plant construction activities.

As the end of the wet season approaches, the company plans to ramp up activities on site, with a focus on the pre-strip needed to uncover ore by about mid-year – with first production flagged before the end of CY22.

MIDAS MINERALS (ASX:MM1)

Midas entered into an option agreement with DiscovEx Resources (ASX:DCX) to acquire the Newington Project in WA, which is prospective for gold and lithium.

The Southern Cross Greenstone Belt hosts numerous gold deposits and also contains the Mt Holland pegmatite hosted lithium deposit being developed by the Wesfarmer and SQM Covalent JV.

“Our initial focus will be on two prospective areas; Mt Correll – Newfield for gold and lithium and Kawana for lithium,” exploration manager Mark Calderwood said.

“We are encouraged by the presence of pegmatites associated with late-stage granites and evidence for extensive lithium, caesium and tantalum anomalism in limited prior multi-element auger geochemistry.”
