Benchmark has released its lithium price assessment for March and it looks like the Chinese carbonate rally has slowed while domestic hydroxide prices maintain upward momentum.
“Lithium carbonate price increases in the Chinese domestic market eased in the second half of March as a result of hesitance from buyers to surpass the RMB 500,000/tonne ($79,000) boundary,” Benchmark said.
“Meanwhile, domestic Chinese lithium hydroxide prices continued to move upwards, narrowing the price disparity that opened up between carbonate and hydroxide in the second half of 2021.”
Benchmark’s own price index has seen a 20.3% increase month-on-month.
“Internationally, prices for small spot volumes of both lithium carbonate and hydroxide continued to move closer to parity with the Chinese spot market, whilst contracts which are not set to be renegotiated until the end of the quarter held the lower end of pricing stable,” they said.
“As such, the Benchmark Lithium Price Index saw an increase of 20.3% m-o-m. In a bid to secure future traditional lithium feedstock supply amid tightening availability, downstream supply chain participants signed spodumene offtake agreements in March.”

The lithium explorer has secured an additional 50-hectare lithium tenement to the east of its ‘Salinas’ project in the Bananal Valley district in eastern Brazil.
The Monte Alto tenement area has known outcropping spodumene bearing pegmatites, grading up to 2.30% Li2O from recent surface sampling by Latin’s geology team.
The company says it will immediately relocate one of the two drilling rigs on site to the new Monte Alto tenement area to commence an initial 2,000m reconnaissance drilling program.

The company has identified extensive pegmatite outcrops at a previously unexplored SE area of its Barrow Creek lithium project in the NT.
“We mapped and sampled over the 6km of strike and sampled every pegmatite outcrop available,” VP exploration and geology Johan Lambrects said.
“The pegmatites in this South-Eastern area and visually similar to the fertile pegmatites identified in the Northern area, but are significantly more numerous and larger.”
The company says a total of 69 rock samples were sent to the lab, with assay results expected in May/June.

Argosy commenced seismic surveying works at the Tonopah Lithium Project in Nevada. The next stage exploration works will comprise drilling the lithium brine targets, to determine lithium brine potential set for later in 2022.
“We expect these works to realise the potential of our strategic project in an established “Tier-1” mining region,” MD Jerko Zuvela said.
“The significant impetus for local lithium supply in the USA has become critical, and our Tonopah Lithium Project is in prime position and enhances Argosy’s value to all strategic groups across the battery and EV industry supply chain.”

Vulcan has executed an agreement to supply German energy company, MVV, with 240 gigawatt hours per year of renewable heat.
Essentially, the company is aiming to produce both renewable geothermal energy and lithium hydroxide for electric vehicle batteries from the same deep brine source in its Zero Carbon Lithium project in Germany.
The heat will be supplied from Vulcan’s planned geothermal wells in the area surrounding the City of Mannheim. Heat will be transferred via heating grids and a series of underground pipes that deliver hot water or steam to buildings in the local community.
Vulcan is developing its Mannheim licence as part of a planned larger Phase 2 of the project.
“We believe that Geothermal renewable energy on a mass scale, combined with lithium extraction from the same deep geothermal source, can and will play an important part in achieving Europe and Germany’s energy security and independence,” MD Dr Francis Wedin said.

The company has received Environmental Impact Assessment approval to explore a second key tenement at its Solaroz lithium brine project in Argentina’s Lithium Triangle.
The 543 hectare Mario Angel tenement is on the western side of the lithium rich Olaroz Salar, just 6km west of Allkem’s (ASX:AKE) brine production fields for its Olaroz processing facility.
Another six tenements are expected to be granted shortly, enabling LEL to get to work proving up its exploration target of 1.5-8.7Mt of lithium carbonate equivalent at a lithium concentration of 500mg/L to 700 mg/L.

Drilling approvals have been received for the company’s Mavis Lake project in Canada, with plans to kick off the 5,000m diamond drilling program in mid-April.
Previous drill programs have yielded high-grade Li2O intercepts including:
- 25m at 1.04% Li2O from 80.75m; and
- 30m at 1.70% Li2O from 111.9m, including 7.70m at 2.97% Li2O from 130.5m.
“We believe that our asset base in Canada and our exploration strategy in country will position the company as a key player in Ontario’s lithium sector,” MD Alex Biggs said.

Larvotto has applied for an exploration licence adjoining its Eyre Project in Western Australia (E63/2213), increasing its landholding to a total of approximately 667km2.
The ground was applied for on the basis of an airborne magnetic geophysical survey that has indicated the presence of interesting rock units within the tenement which is immediately east of the company’s Merivale lithium prospect and south of Liontown Resources Limited’s (ASX:LTR) Buldania lithium project.
Larvotto will commence an auger soil geochemical sampling program as soon as Native Title approvals are received to test two initial areas, prospective for lithium and base metals, where historical exploration has identified broad anomalous zones.
