All your lithium news, Wednesday July 5.
Warren Buffett-backed Chinese carmaker BYD is building a plant in Brazil with capacity to produce 150,000 electric vehicles per year, Bloomberg reports.
US$100bn capped BYD, the world’s biggest EV maker alongside Tesla, sold 253,046 EVs in June – a big 100% jump on the same period last year.
All up, 1.2m BYD EVs have been sold in the first half of 2023.
Its move into Brazil’s Bahia state would be its first outside Asia as it looks to “extend its geographical reach amid a global surge in sales”, Bloomberg says.
Operations are expected to start by 2024.
Sigma Lithium’s (TSX.V:SGML) success at its new 270,000tpa Grota do Cirilo hard rock mine has been a positive litmus test for operating in Brazil.
It’s sparked a torrent of interest in the country’s lithium, with Solis Minerals (ASX:SLM) boss Matty Boyes recently telling Stockhead that “there are people coming at [project] owners from all angles.”
“The prices are just going exponential as you are trying to close a deal,” he says.
“There is a lot of interest from North America. American juniors, Canadian juniors are throwing big money at assets in Brazil, so you must make sure you have a network in place, people that can get these assets to you ahead of the next guy.”

Latin Resources (ASX:LRS) is the most advanced of the ASX stocks, with a 45.2Mt @ 1.34% Li2O (~1.5Mt LCE) resource at Colina, part of the Salinas project in Minas Gerais state.
Ahead of its planned PEA, another 25,000m of drilling is currently underway to expand the overall footprint of Colina to the west and southwest where the resource remains open along strike.
LRS spinout Solis announced the acquisition of the Jaguar lithium project in late May.
At Jaguar – located in Bahia state — the company says there are rock chips grading up to 4.95% Li2O along a 1km long, 50m wide spodumene-rich pegmatite body.
Drilling is already underway. It also has a lithium project in northern Brazil called Borborema and several additional acquisitions in the pipeline.
Oceana Lithium (ASX:OCN) has started a 3,000m scout drilling program to test for near-surface lithium at the 124sqkm Solonópole project.
Drilling starts at the Bom Jesus de Baixo pegmatite before moving to other peggie outcrops, the company says.
Gold Mountain (ASX:GMN) has a bunch of early-stage exploration ground near LRS and Sigma in northeastern Brazil, as does SI6 Metals (ASX:SI6).

Red hot Azure Minerals (ASX:AZS) has picked up another 32sqkm of ground next to its flagship Andover project, where it’s currently drilling out a potentially monstrous lithium deposit.
AZS’ ground now covers all identified pegmatites (rocks that can contain lithium) in the district, it says.
The company currently has five rigs site drilling for lithium, with another mobilising to site as we speak.
The addition of extra rigs “is being assessed”, it says. Wowsers.
Infill (close spaced) drilling ahead of a maiden resource will kick off shortly, it says.
Krakatoa Resources (ASX:KTA) has picked up a bunch of high-grade rock chips – peak assay 4.3% Li2O – at Wilsons, part of the King Tamba project near Mount Magnet in WA.
The outcropping peggies at Wilsons (3-4m wide, +250m long) were historically drilled for tantalum but never assayed for lithium, KTA says.
Mineralogy is underway to determine which minerals – spodumene (ideal) or lepidolite (less ideal, but still ok) – are hosting the elevated lithium within these rock samples.
Drill planning is also underway.
Dynamic Metals (ASX:DYM) will take up to 2000 soil samples as part of an early-stage exploration program at the Pioneer Dome project.
Pioneer Dome is right next door to Essential Metals’ (ASX:ESS) in-demand 11.2Mt @ 1.2% Li2O Dome North asset.
READ: More M&A to brighten your day as Develop and Ramelius pounce on lithium and gold
If some decent targets are acquired drilling will kick off later in the year, DYM says.
Accelerate Resources (ASX:AX8) has applied for more ground neighbouring Global Lithium Resources’ (ASX:GL1) 18Mt Archer deposit.
Two of the four tenement applications are subject to competing applications by other companies, with final ownership to be decided by ballot.
AX8 now has ~800 km2 of exploration tenure in WA’s Pilbara.
Results of an initial mapping/rock chip sampling program to evaluate new targets are pending.
Michael Fotios-led Scorpion Minerals (ASX:SCN) has reported reasonable widths and grades in lithium drilling at the Youanmi project in WA.
Final results from the program included a highlight of 5m @ 1.13% Li2O from 79m, 9m @ 0.90% Li2O from 108m, and 6m @ 0.92% Li2O from 113m.
SCN reckons these mineralised peggies (up to 1km long, 5-15m wide) are ‘stacked’ on top of each other.
More drilling to define the size and scale of this “considerable lithium project” is now being planned.
Oceana Lithium (ASX:OCN) is the latest to pick up ground in the increasingly crowded James Bay region of Quebec, Canada.
The 104sqkm Monaro project shares the same geological setting as Winsome Resources’ (ASX:WR1) recent Adina lithium discovery 30km away, OCN says.
The area has also attracted the attention of Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO), which recently entered an option agreement to acquire 70% interest in a number of lithium exploration properties, including the Galinée property that is proximal to Monaro, by spending up to C$65m.
A new $4.1m placement at 32c per share will underpin exploration at Monaro.
A fully funded drill program is currently underway at the Solonópole project in Brazil, with first assays due in 6-8 weeks.
Gold-focused Torque Metals (ASX:TOR) has successfully applied for new tenements close to the large Bald Hill lithium mine in WA, “with potential for battery minerals”.
Sabre Resources (ASX:SBR) is fast-tracking a lithium targeting program at the Sherlock Bay nickel project, down the road from Azure Minerals’ Andover discoveries.
Iceni Gold (ASX:ICL) is also taking a closer look at a recently identified 10km long lithium target on its tenure in WA.
Terrain Minerals (ASX:TMX) has started drilling for lithium and gold on its Smokebush project in WA. Assays from a previous drilling program – which hit thick pegmatite – are due in August, the company says.
