All your lithium news, Friday December.

Building on its commitment to grow an all-electric vehicle range, Ford has invested a further £149mn on expanding production of electric vehicle components at the car makers factory in Liverpool.

The boost increases electric drive unit production capacity at the Halewood plant by 70pc to 420,000 units a year, from 250,000 units, starting in 2024.

It also brings Ford’s total investment to almost £380 million as the plant, which currently produces transmissions for internal combustion engine vehicles, undergoes a transition to production of EV parts.

“The latest investment will help safeguard the 500 high-value Ford jobs at Halewood and upskill them for Ford’s EV future,” the company said on Thursday.

“Our vision in Europe is to build a thriving business, by extending leadership in commercial vehicles and through the electrification of our car range,” Ford’s European industrial operations vice-president Kieran Cahill says.

“Halewood is playing a critical part as our first in-house investment in EV component manufacturing in Europe.”

Ford’s EV push in Europe supports the acceleration of the company’s global plan for a two million annual production of EVs in the same 2026 time frame.

CHARGER METALS (ASX:CHR)

CHR has kicked off drilling to test outcropping Medcalf spodumene-pegmatites at the Lake Johnston Lithium Project.

The initial program aims to test a 300m by 800m outcropping pegmatite swarm in a program of up to 40 reverse circulation drillholes.

Ongoing mapping continues to identify additional spodumene pegmatite outcrops in this area, CHR says.

CHR’s Lake Johnston Lithium Project has attracted considerable interest due to its proximity to the large Earl Grey Lithium Project under development by Covalent Lithium, the manager of a joint venture between subsidiaries of Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. and Wesfarmers – 70km west of the Lake Johnston Project.

Earl Grey is the world’s third largest hard rock deposit of contained lithium with ore reserves estimated at 94.2 Mt at 1.5% Li2O1.
