Arizona Lithium is fast-tracking a definitive feasibility study (DFS) for its Big Sandy Lithium project in Arizona , based on encouraging results of a scoping study, which identified fresh opportunities using new extraction technology.

Arizona Lithium’s (ASX:AZL) Lithium Research Centre in Tempe, Arizona, will be the base of operations for technology development and where test work is performed focusing on sustainability including alternative lixiviants and water conservation technologies.

The DFS will not only begin immediately but will feature a range of new developments ahead of completion in a year’s time such as the use of a full-scale fleet of Nikola Tre BEV electric semi-trucks to minimise the carbon footprint associated with transportation of raw materials and finished products.

Other developments include things like a chemically stable leached tailing that can be used as direct backfill for mining and reclamation activities, the direct conversion of a mid-stream lithium compound to battery grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide through modular plants, and the application of direct lithium extraction.

Early test work has demonstrated that DLE technology can be used to reject leached contaminants at a higher level of efficiency than conventional technology and an option for design and production of DLE media at commercial scale will also be included in the DFS.

Full steam ahead

AZL managing director Paul Lloyd says he is currently in the US with the senior leadership finalising the signing of key contractors for the DFS and how to best utilise the DFS in the most environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.

“We are delighted to be fast tracking this work to accelerate the development of the Big Sandy Project,” he says.

“I look forward to keeping shareholders up to date with new strategic partnerships, progress of the feasibility study and delivering an exciting report before the end of 2023.”
