ASX SMALL CAP WINNERS:

Opthea (ASX:OPT) +153%

A one-day gain of 148 per cent this week makes Opthea easily the best-performing small cap health or biotech stock on the ASX, at a time when the majority are trending downwards.

On Wednesday, the company announced that its OPT-302 drug had worked in a Phase II clinical trial in patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

CEO Megan Baldwin told a broker gathering the trial results were “just the start”.

“We have a drug we’ve demonstrated in a highly powered trial that’s showing a clinically meaningful benefit over and above standard treatment,” she said.

“This is the only drug that has achieved this endpoint to this level of significance.”

 

Golden Rim Resources (ASX:GMR): +64%

A stampede of positive exploration or mining announcements usually coincide with the Diggers & Dealers conference in Kalgoorlie.

This year was no different. At the small cap end, Golden Rim’s big hits at the Kouri gold project in Burkina Faso proved a standout.

Intersections included 1m at 783.8g/t gold from 44m, inside a larger 7m intercept grading 121.2g/t. That’s outrageous.

Golden Rim’s Craig Mackay says these are the best drilling results from Kouri so far – but seems optimistic there’s more to come.

“To date we have only explored a small portion of the entire granite area within which Diabatou [target] is located,” he says.

 

Sky Metals (ASX:SKY) +59%

Sky Metals’ maiden exploration drilling program at the Tallebung tin project in NSW is already coming up with the goods.

The first core hole (TBD001) would be extended past its originally planned depth of 650m, the explorer says, because it just keeps hitting mineralisation.

Chief exec Peter Duerden says the results demonstrate the existence of “a large scale mineralising system”.
