Forget the chore of preparing the traditional Christmas dinner with its giant hams, turkey, vegetables and sauces. Just take a page from millions of Japanese and order a special dinner – from Kentucky Fried Chicken.
That’s right, come the Christmas season, millions of Japanese put in orders (often weeks in advance) for some fried chicken in what has become a national tradition.
While you are pondering the downright magical abilities displayed by KFC Japan’s marketing team in the 1970s, here are some of this week’s small caps movers and shakers.
Santana Minerals (ASX:SMI) +67%
Shares in Santana Minerals put on gains after shareholders gave the green light to a $3m placement of shares priced at 3c each to fund the acquisition of the Phu Lon nickel sulphide prospect in Laos from Mekong Minerals.
Trenching at Phu Lon had returned results of 975m at 0.51 per cent nickel including 42m at 1.02 per cent nickel, 90m at 0.67 per cent nickel and 80m at 0.74 per cent nickel.
Proceeds from the placement will also be used for drilling at Phu Lon, which is scheduled to start in January 2020.
HomeStay Care (ASX:HSC) +36%
Australian medtech device maker HomeStay Care has put on some weight after reaching a binding agreement to change its licence agreement with Essence APAC.
In return for 50 million shares in HomeStay, Essence APAC will sell its solutions to HomeStay at wholesale cost while removing its licence fee and fees for support services.
Threat Protect Australia (ASX:TPS) +40%
Just like Santana, Threat Protect Australia also saw gains after announcing a new substantial holder, Hong Kong-based Black Crane Capital.
This time though, Black Crane bought $5m worth of shares at a 45 per cent premium to Wednesday’s closing price.

Australis Oil & Gas (ASX:ATS) -38%
Despite reporting that it had brought a further two wells at its Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in the US into production, shares in Australis Oil & Gas were down this week.
The wells were completed to test a more conservative choke management regime that is expected to reduce early production volumes but improve long term oil production rates and recovery factors.
