It’s a chilling tale, a weaponised strain of the influenza virus is accidentally released, causing a pandemic that wipes out most of the world’s population.

If that sounds suspiciously familiar, that’s because of the many similarities to the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping across the globe right now that has infected nearly 1.36 million and killed more than 79,000 people.

It is also the synopsis for the novel The Stand, which was authored by famous horror writer Stephen King and first published in 1978.

Said author is rather apologetic, telling fans who told him that the COVID-10 outbreak is like stepping into one of his stories that he is sorry.

“There was never any question that in our society, where travel is a staple of daily life, that sooner or later, there was going to be a virus that was going to communicate to the public at large,” he told NPR.

Before we go back to comparing the similarities between the +40 year old book and the current pandemic, here are some of the small cap movers at both ends of the market.

ASX SMALL CAP WINNERS

Assetowl (ASX:AO1) +275%

With the COVID-19 outbreak putting a crimp on physical home inspections, real estate agents are turning to online inspections and Assetowl’s software appears to be in the right spot at the right time.

Its inspector360 software is enjoying heavy demand, allowing real estate agents to capture virtual tours with smartphone cameras capable of taking panoramic photos.

The app is also able to manage a lot of the paperwork required in property management.

G Medical Innovations (ASX:GMV) +200%

Shares in G Medical shot up this week after its Prizma device to monitor vital signs such as temperature, heart rate and stress levels was granted over-the-counter authorisation by the US Food & Drug Administration.

The authorisation, which is based on US policy for the COVID-19 emergency, allows the device to be sold directly to consumers without a prescription.

ASX SMALL CAP LOSERS

88 Energy (ASX:88E) -62%

Alaska-focused 88 Energy had a challenging week after UK partner Premier Oil pulled out of their joint venture because the Charlie-1 appraisal well did not meet its pre-drill expectations despite intersecting a large condensate discovery.

While the cost of the well remained within the expected budget and is covered by Premier, the company said that further analysis was required to determine whether the discovery could be commercialised on Alaska’s North Slope given the likely high gas content.
