Weekly ASX small cap wrap: Russia puts its claim on Venus

Time to start whipping up a batch of borscht. Russia – or at least the chief of its space agency – has declared that Venus is a “Russian planet” and that it will send its own mission to the second planet from the sun.

This declaration comes after a recent scientific study found hints that life could exist on Venus, which is famously known for its hellish atmosphere.

Russia is the only country to have landed probes on our nearest planetary neighbour, though these predictably lasted for hours at best before failing.

While markets dipped slightly this morning, here are the biggest ASX small cap movers.

ASX SMALL CAP WINNERS

Sagalio Energy (ASX:SAN) +2050%, East Energy Resources (ASX:EER) +800%

There has been an absolute paucity of any real news from our two biggest small cap gainers, so just why did their share prices climb so much?

Mike Cooper explored some possible reasons for the big jumps with EER likely rising on Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s new gas policy while Saglio’s rise could be following on from fellow central Asia-based minnow Jupiter Energy’s (ASX:JPR) impressive share price rise over recent days.

Jupiter itself is fifth on our list, rising on news that the Kazakhstan government might be changing its regulations to allow oil producers to sell direct to the global market at prevailing prices.

Redbank Copper (ASX:RCP) +258%

Shares in Redbank surged after the company was reinstated onto the ASX following a restructuring and recapitalisation.

The company has an extensive ground position for base metals in the McArthur River Basin in the Northern Territory and the Millers Creek project in South Australia.

ASX SMALL CAP LOSERS

BrainChip Holdings (ASX:BRN) -45%

Despite saying that its Akida Neuromorphic semiconductor technology is now complete for its “System-on-Chip (NSoC) design with functional silicon”, which was built out by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Brainchip shares dipped this week.

The market could have taken the big gains it had already made earlier this month.
