Stanmore Resources (ASX:SMR) ripped higher, after confirming the completion of an institutional share placement in connection with its US$1.2b deal to buy BHP’s BMC operations in Queensland.

A book-build to fund any shortfalls in institutional demand was completed at the same price as the placement ($1.10), allowing SMR to raise the bulk of the equity component of its financing arrangements for the deal, as coal prices surge higher.

Also leading the markets was Structural Monitoring Systems (ASX:SMN), which announced US regulatory approval for its sensor technology used in detecting critical structural cracks on aircraft.

Another coal player, Canada-based Montem Resources (ASX:MR1) also jumped after announcing that its coal project won’t be affected by ministerial recommendations based on Coal Policy Committee reports commissioned by the Government of Alberta.

And oil exploration play Brookside Energy (ASX:BRK) also jumped after flagging an update on its US drilling operations.

“Brookside is pleased to announce that it has taken advantage of an opportunity presented in the Oklahoma rig market and acted quickly to secure the services of Kenai Rig 18 to drill the Flames Well,” the company said.
