Here’s what you should know before the ASX opens today…
At 7am AEST Tuesday, ASX futures were 0.7% higher, which points to an upbeat start to the session.
Here’s what happened overnight…
Wall Street up, tech stocks on the mend
Overnight trading in the US saw the S&P 500 gain 0.26%, the Dow Jones push into the green by 0.15%, and the Nasdaq composite move almost 0.5% higher on tech-based gains.
All three are closing back in on their all-time highs set only about a week ago.
Tech stocks are the main story of the morning, recovering at least some of their losses from a beating late last week.
Amazon added 1.09% after its its 5.1% hammering last week, and Microsoft rose about 0.6% to recover some of its 1.2% dip.
STOCK INDICES | Value | Change |
ASX 200 | 8,863 | 0.85% |
S&P 500 | 6,661 | 0.26% |
Dow Jones | 46,316 | 0.15% |
Nasdaq Comp | 22,591 | 0.48% |
Euro Stoxx 50 | 5,507 | 0.13% |
UK FTSE | 9,300 | 0.16% |
German DAX | 23,745 | 0.02% |
French CAC | 7,881 | 0.13% |
Meanwhile crude oil prices slumped.
But looking ahead, the market has its eyes on an incoming US jobs report landing at the end of the week. Traders and investors will be hoping for a decent balance there – enough for Jerome Powell and pals at the Fed to stay the course with interest rate cuts.
What else? A potential government shutdown still looms midweek in the US but investors largely seem to be looking past that for the moment.
Oh, and gold has hit a fresh new personal best. Broken record on that one in more ways than one.
Copper made the strongest move to the upside on the list below, though, followed by Bitcoin.
