Lunchtime ASX small cap wrap: Who’s prepared for the robot apocalypse today?
News
Remember Spot? The robot dog built by Boston Dynamics that looks decidedly…real?
For those who need a refresher:
(Admittedly, Spot looks more tame than its dog/snake hybrid cousin that can open doors with its mouth).
Early footage served to help spark the collective imagination that the (evil) robots are now on their way and humans’ time on earth could be limited.
But for now, Spot is putting its powers to good use. In fact, it’s just landed a new job.
The four-legged machine will take up a role at Norwegian oil & gas company Aker BP, stationed on an ocean vessel where it will carry out safety surveillance and run inspections for machinery leaks.
While the robots remain benevolent (for now), stocks continued to track higher as the ASX Small Ords rose 0.62 per cent to 3,042 into midday trade. The ASX200 was up 0.48 per cent to 7,090.

The gold explorer was among the big winners in morning trade, after confirming that everything is in order to commence drilling in April at its Yule project in the Pilbara Caton.
The fact Golden State surged on a simple drilling update appears to be evidence of investor excitement around the Pilbara Craton — the same region where De Grey Mining (ASX:DEG) recently announced a gold strike that saw its share price surge.

The base metals explorer provided an update on its Abercorn alumina project, where it recently completed a 62-hole drill program.
Metalsearch said the results exceeded expectations, confirming the “high-quality nature of mineralisation” at Abercorn, however markets sent the stock down 20 per cent in morning trade to 1.2c.
