Local stocks look set to close out the 2020 financial year in positive territory, as investors continue to weigh the outlook amid a surge in positive COVID-19 cases across multiple US states.
Those health concerns have been accompanied by ongoing protests across the country, which brings us to St Louis where around 300 protestors marched through a gated community on Sunday night to demand the resignation of Mayor Lyda Krewson.
At that point, they were confronted by a middle-aged couple, Mark and Patricia McCloskey, who emerged on their front lawn packing some serious heat.
While no shots were fired, the bizarre standoff was picked up by the global news cycle over the past 24 hours in what marks another “Only in America” event.
63-year old personal-injury lawyer Mark McCloskey later told reporters he feared for his life and called 911 after hearing the protestors break down the gate to Portland Place. However, footage appeared to show the group walking through an unbroken gate.
Elsewhere, news reports indicate that legislators in China have unanimously agreed to pass new security laws for Hong Kong, as the Chinese government expands its control over the semi-autonomous territory.
Things weren’t quite so tense on the local market, where the ASX rebounded from yesterday’s fall off the back of a strong US lead overnight.
The ASX200 started strongly before easing back to 5,886.50 points by midday EST, a gain of 1.26 per cent. The Small Ords Index was 1.4 per cent higher at 2,591.10 points.

Wireless technology company Etherstack (ASX:ESK) turned heads in morning trade, as the stock surged by more than 300 per cent to its highest level since 2014.
It followed news of an integration deal with global telco giant Samsung — the result of a 12-month development process aimed at establishing a public protocol for LMR (Land Mobile Radio) applications used for public safety communications by emergency services.
After trading between 10 and 30c for the last two years, Etherstack shares surged from around 12c to above 50c.
