ASX Small Cap Lunchtime Wrap: Who’s taking to the streets today?
News
Breakfast news outlets in Australia this morning were busy trying to summarise a weekend of mayhem in the US.
Mass protests against policy brutality continue to run across more than 20 US cities, following the death in custody of George Floyd last week in Minneapolis.
Right now it’s a bit hard to know where to look — dispatches switch from police clashes with protestors, to masked groups damaging property and looting stores, to peaceful protestors cleaning graffiti and apprehending rioters.
President Trump has so far been quiet on the matter, aside from some tweets taking aim at far-left political groups.
And in an another example of “Only in America”, while chaos reigned on the ground there was plenty of activity in orbit, as SpaceX successfully launched its two-man shuttle which became the first private spaceship to dock at the International Space Station.
There’s also the (seemingly minor) matter of an ongoing global health pandemic, and rising geopolitical tensions as China tightens its grip over Hong Kong.
So in response to all that, local stocks were…indifferent.
After a flat start, the ASX200 shrugged off the geopolitical tension to climb by around 0.7 per cent into midday trade. And after outperforming in May, the Small Ords Index edged higher by around 0.2 per cent to 2,664 points.
