Local stocks have opened the week on a relatively resilient footing, after US markets closed strongly on Friday night.

However, early gains have skewed towards the big end of town, with the ASX200 gaining around 1 per cent while the Small Ords Index dipped into the red.

The relatively buoyant performance follows news of another 177 positive COVID-19 cases in Victoria, with NSW now on high alert for more outbreaks after 10 new cases were reported via community transmission.

US stock futures are also pointing higher, even though Florida just reported a daily COVID-19 record for any US state with more than 15,000 daily infections on Sunday.

Despite those eye-watering numbers, some of Friday’s rally on US markets was attributed to continued optimism around potential virus treatments currently being developed.

It’s been a big morning for tech minnow PureProfile (ASX:PPL), which opened the day with a market capitalisation of just $940,000.

With no market announcements since its quarterly 4C filing on April 30, the company said this morning it had hired a new CEO, Martin Filz, who currently runs data analytics business Eureka AI.

Whether investors warmed to the new staff hire or not is unclear, but the stock promptly ripped higher by more than 300 per cent to climb back to its highest level since January 2019.

Shares in digital services company Webcentral Group (ASX:WCG) also rose strongly on the back of a takeover offer from US company Web.com, which has offered to buy the business for $12.2m.

The 10c per share offer represented a material increase from its recent trading price, but is still a far cry from the Webcentral’s 2018 peak when its stock price reached $3.65.
