Could a growing advertising boycott hit the social media giants where it hurts?

In the battle against hate speech on social media platforms, large advertisers like Unilever, Starbucks, Coca Cola and Diageo have been pressured to halt advertising on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Last year, Facebook alone made $US69.7bn ($101.2bn) in global ad revenue. News of the growing boycott was enough to wipe 8.3 per cent, or $US56bn, from its market cap on Friday.

Twitter and Snap were also down 7.4 per cent and 5.76 per cent, respectively.

To markets…

A confluence of shitty news saw US share markets fall sharply on Friday.

Texas and Florida paused drinking at bars and Arizona was the latest to report a fresh surge in COVID-19 infections.

Bank shares plummeted when the US Federal Reserve capped dividends and banned buybacks until September.

And a Wall Street Journal story also indicated that the ‘Phase 1’ US-China trade deal could be at risk.

The local bourse has followed the US lower in morning trade, with the ASX200 Index down 1.1 per cent to 5,839.1 points at 12pm EST.
