ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Who’s taking the ‘anti sex’ bed for a test run today?

Olympic organisers say the cardboard beds being used in the athlete’s village promote the use of recycled materials, but media reports (and athletes) suggest they are being used to deter competitors having sex with each other.

Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has been quick to cry “fake news” after thoroughly testing the beds sturdiness:

Last month Tokyo Olympic organizers said they planned to give away about 150,000 condoms at the Games, “though they are telling athletes to take them home rather than use them in the Olympic Village”, CNN reports.

Lol.

To Markets:

A ‘Delta-variant’ inspired selloff hit global markets overnight, amid fears of renewed shutdowns and a delayed economic recovery.

The highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant — now the dominant strain across the globe — has caused a surge in new infections and deaths, nearly exclusively among unvaccinated people, Morningstar says.

On Wall Street, the benchmark Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ indexes were down 2.09%, 1.58% and 1.06%, respectively.

The blue-chip Dow had its worst day in nearly nine months, Morningstar says, while the CBOE Volatility index — a gauge of investor anxiety — touched its highest level in two months.

“Much of it is related to the Delta (variant),” Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management told Morningstar.

“There’s some concern too that maybe the economy is not going to open up as quickly as everyone thinks, and the big boom that everyone’s expecting is going to be more of a pop than a boom.”

Today, the benchmark ASX 200 immediately plummeted on the open … and then did this:

Nice recovery.
