Local stocks continued their strong start to the week this morning, as the ASX climbed back to a five-month high.

Gains were mainly led by the big end of town, as the ASX200 climbed by more than 1 per cent while the Small Ords Index traded flat.

It followed a buoyant session on Wall Street as capital markets remain liquid and well-funded by huge policy stimulus measures.

NAB’s monthly business survey showed business conditions on the ground had broadly recovered to pre-COVID levels in July.

However, the data was collected in the final week of July as stage-four lockdown restrictions in Victoria came into effect, which saw confidence around the outlook take another big hit.

Elsewhere in markets, a strong session for the US dollar saw the AUD retreat back below US72c, while USD-denominated gold also fell back towards the $US2,000 mark.

LED lighting company Traffic Technologies (ASX:TTI) held its gains into midday trade, after announcing a five-year deal with NSW infrastructure giant Ausgrid.

The company said it expected to supply more than 60,000 LED lighting units over the term of the deal, as Ausgrid repairs and/or upgrades its existing traffic and street lighting network.

Sheffield Resources (ASX:SFX) also jumped after signing a “transformational joint venture” with China-owned Yansteel, which will make a $130m equity investment to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the Thunderbird mineral sands project in WA’s Dampier Peninsula.

And biotech stock Regeneus (ASX:RGS) ripped higher after (finally) doing a deal with Kyocera Corporation to develop and commercialise its stem cell treatment Progenza for knee osteoarthritis in Japan.
