Another round of junior explorers populated the top end of the today’s small cap winners’ list.
But as far as mining efforts go, they’re unlikely to match the resourcefulness of this US public servant.
42 year-old Christopher Naples is facing court, after being accused of using the computing facilities at the Suffolk County Center in Riverhead, NY to mine Bitcoin.
Given BTC’s rapidly ascending price, mining coins can be lucrative and Naples had a number of computers engaged in the pursuit, which prosecutors estimate cost taxpayers an extra US$6,000 in power costs.
Naples is facing charges of public corruption and grand larceny, and could face jail time if convicted.
In markets, local stocks recouped some losses following a rough session yesterday, and look set to end the week on a higher note.
The ASX 200 tracked steadily higher but it was comfortably outpaced by the microcap Emerging Companies index, which rose by more than 1.5% into midday trade.
Other markets in Asia also steadied, as stocks in China and Japan rose while gold prices and the Aussie dollar were little-changed, trading at just under US$1,800/oz and US74c respectively.

A flurry of new IPOs hit the market in morning trade, and express courier service Zoom2U Technologies (ASX:Z2U) was the standout performer.
Z2U raised $8m from investors at $0.20 per share, giving it a market capitalisation of $34.7m, and opened at 34.5c for a day-one gain of more than 70%.
Outside of mining stocks, junior oil & gas play Bass Oil (ASX:BAS) ticked higher after announcing that it’s secured funding to acquire four tenements in the Cooper Basin for a total consideration of $650,000.
