The ASX came under pressure heading into midday trade, after Australia’s May jobs report missed the mark this morning.

Stocks have so far shrugged off the widening gap between markets and the economy, but sentiment dimmed after the data showed 227,000 jobs were lost between April and May.

That was well in excess of forecasts (-78,000), while the unemployment rate rose to 7.1 per cent — a figure which would’ve been higher if not for a fall in the participation rate as more people left the workforce entirely.

Underemployment — those with jobs who would like to work more hours — also remained elevated above 13 per cent as total job losses since the onset of COVID-19 rose above 800,000.

In response, local stocks extended their morning declines with both the ASX200 and the Small Ords Index down more than 1 per cent.

Oil & gas minnow BPH Energy (ASX:BPH) returned to the ASX boards (after being on voluntary hiatus since April 30), and promptly rose by more than 150 per cent.

It followed a due diligence period for what the company described as a “COVID-related transaction” — a deal which has now been terminated by mutual consent after ASX disclosure requirements around intellectual property and testing could not be met.

The company also provided an update on its joint venture project with Advent Energy (in which it holds a 15 per cent stake), in which a drill permit application off the coast of NSW has “completed assessment and is now in the final decision phase”
