Special report: Creso Pharma is preparing a toast, as it moves ahead with its plans to bring cannabis terpene-infused beers and chocolates to market.

The company (ASX:CPH) told investors today its joint venture with Canadian cannabis investor LGC Capital and Baltic Beer, which operates under the brand CLV Frontier Brands, is progressing well, with new beers set to launch in the UK in October.

Branding has been finalised and samples sent to Europe, Israel and Australia.

Creso and Baltic Beer have been working on two cannabis-flavoured brews under the Old Boy Mary Jane brand  Ghost Bog Hazy IPA and Improper Pils.

The beers contain blends of organic essential oils called “terpenes” which give off the distinctive aroma and signature of specific cannabis strains.

Terpenes are organic, fragrant oils found in plants that carry flavour and aroma.

The terpenes used in the beer will carry the characteristic odour and aroma of cannabis but they aren’t derived from cannabis — and won’t contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound that gets you high.

Cheers to growth

The move is part of Creso’s strategy to leverage agreements with quality commercial partners to successfully launch and distribute products on a global scale, particularly as cannabis legislation continues to evolve in markets around the world.

The company says several of the global leaders in alcoholic beverages, including Molson Coors Brewing Co and Constellation Brands Inc. are investing heavily in developing cannabis-infused beverages.

Another beverage giant, Diageo, is also rumoured to be entering the field.

Branding of the first two beers to be launched by Creso and CLV Frontier Brands.

Creso head Miri Halperin Wernli sees big opportunities in the space.

“Big beverage companies have seen the opportunity as consumer appetites grow for products infused with cannabis and enhanced with terpenes.”

“Creso, with its established presence in the US and Canada, where the biggest potential currently lies, is perfectly positioned for its products to become a leader in this new and emerging field.”

It’s a strategy Creso plans to replicate with its other Lifestyle product categories.

It sees a similar opportunity for cannabis-infused products in the functional foods space.

Functional foods are foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition.

Creso has also partnered with Swiss chocolatier Felchlin on a terpene-enriched line of premium Swiss chocolates, with the aim of bringing products to market by the end of the year.
