Infinity Lithium is partnering with local businesses around its San Jose project in Spain’s Extremadura region to upskill and prepare the community to capture the opportunities of the EV revolution.

Infinity Lithium’s (ASX:INF) local subsidiary, Extremadura New Energies, has partnered with coal business clusters LOABRE and Extremadura Electric Mobility Cluster (CarEX) to form the Group of Innovative Companies, in an agreement focused on training and economic development for the local community of Cáceres.

INF says the Group has reinforced its support for the company’s integrated lithium processing project in the Spanish region, supporting the establishment of business initiatives within the lithium ion battery value chain.

It will collaborate with Extremadura New Energies to promote and progress the economic development of industrial projects in Cáceres.

The Group will also be among the first to benefit from a 10 million Euro commitment from the European Battery Alliance last month to accelerate training and development In the industry with the establishment of the EBA Battery Academy.

INF says Extremadura New Energies and the Group are collaborating to allocate the first licences of upskilling and reskilling programs under the EBA Battery Academy for local members of the Group.

They will also work to offer specific training within the energy storage, electric mobility and renewable energy sectors, providing an ecosystem for economic growth, fighting against unemployment and depopulation and to generate economic and social opportunities for the people of Cáceres and Extremadura.

“Signing this agreement today brings me great satisfaction. The true industrialization of Extremadura begins here,” CarEX president Tomas Sanchez said.

Local commitment

Extremadura New Energies CEO Ramón Jiménez Serrano said the partnership continued the business’ work to build connections with the local community, ensuring its lithium processing project will bring the widest possible benefits for Cáceres and Extremadura.

It will provide a generational opportunity to establish new skills to support the lithium-ion battery value chain and the move to eMobility, helping make the region a hub in the future-facing industry.

“This will turn Cáceres into a training hub for a sector that is only going to grow in importance. It will provide young people from Cáceres with the skills and employability they need for the future,” Serrano said.

ENE, LOABRE and CarEX will deliver a series of events aligned to the project and the energy transition across the storage, eMobility and renewable sectors.

Extremadura already contributes close to a quarter of Spain’s total solar photovoltaic generated electricity, making it ideally positioned to capitalise on Europe’s shift to sustainable energy.

Spain’s role as a leader in the shift to provide energy independence in Europe has been noted by European Commission President Ursula von de Leyen this month.

“The EU must get rid of its dependency on fossil fuels. Spain is a frontrunner here, with its large renewables share and LNG capacities. Spain can and will play an important role in supplying Europe,” she said on March 6.

In line with this transition, INF said its collaboration with LOABRE and CarEX provides the first step in developing the necessary skills and capabilities for energy transition industries in Cáceres.
